Smith thought there was a chance he’d end up missing the entire year when he went on Injured Reserve on Oct. 3. However, he was back to doing full speed running and cutting on the field. He started practicing again within the past few weeks, and the Dolphins added him to the roster when Jermon Bushrod was ruled out for the season with a foot injury.
If Miami is sticking with its starters for the final two games as Gase indicated, there’s no obvious spot for Smith. Laremy Tunsil is entrenched at left tackle, and Young has been playing well on the right side. If there’s an opportunity to get him in, though, it seems like the Dolphins are eager to test him out with an eye on him contributing next season.
“He did a lot of really good things that we liked,” Gase said. “I love how engaged he’s been since he’s been hurt. He just constantly kept working… It just starts moving so fast and you’re trying to keep your body right and keep up with what’s going on because as the season goes on… if you’re not practicing, it can get tough. He did a great job of staying up to speed and making sure that when he got a chance to jump back out there, he was ready to go.”

the offseason plan for the line: more of the same is wrong. Every position needs to be evaluated. We also need depth. Year after year we are a MASH unit. I know you can't predict injuries, but depth is needed here

The coaching staff like what they see and he has worked hard...............get hin out there.

Play him. You already know what you have in the career journey man in Young.

Play all of the young players. We aren’t going to the playoffs so let’s see what they can do.

I believe Eric Smith and Jesse Davis will be Miami’s starting RT and RG in 2018. Miami had one of the best drafts and UDFA classes in team history in April of 2017. Eric Smith was part of that haul, with Davis coming the year before. These two offer Miami a long term answer along the offensive line. Both fulfill the teams philosophy of finding young cheap offensive linemen beyond the first few rounds of the draft. Both also offer, baring injury, Miami a chance to solidify the line for the next 3-4 years, before Davis actually becomes an F/A himself. I’m excited to see what Davis and Smith can do moving forward. The sky is the limit.

This is great news. His injury went under the radar. I hope we see him out there. No reason not to.

Exaclty, it’s not the same old plan, you also have Brendal and need to find out next year if Asiata can play or not.

I just get the feeling Smith wont get reps unless we suffer another injury.

Okay good, right in time for the ending of our dismal season. Baby steps...

Miami's OL for next season ...

Tunsil at LT, Davis at RG.

That makes 3 positions to fill. I'm hoping Miami moves on from Pouncey freeing up some good cap space. If they do, Miami will have the option of filling the center position with Brendel, FA, or the draft. If not Brendel then he becomes good depth. There's also Steen who currently is on IR. He makes for good depth at G or C. There's also Young who is good depth at both tackles. One big question is can Smith become good enough at RT that Miami lets James walk which also frees up good cap space. If Smith can only become good enough for depth and not starting material then Miami will most likely resign James at RT. I'm rooting for Smith for cap reasons. Miami can quickly fix the OL if they can focus on filling only the C and LG positions. Rooting for Smith to have two good games and stay healthy.

So depth could already be on the team. Brendel, Steen, Young, Asiata, and maybe Smith.

Jackson said weeks ago that they were gonna add 2 pieces on the o line this offseason.

I’m not sure I believe it unless pouncey goes

This o lines not as bad as it’s made out to be and gase knows he can scheme the run game and limit protection exposure

Asiata they probably plan on being tbe 2 deep right guard at least in 2018

I can certainly see Miami staying with Young at RT till the end of the season, he’s played well and has earned it. But, It wouldn’t surprise me, if they gave Smith some solid reps at RT over the last 2 games as well. To be honest, I’d love for Miami to draft Quentin Nelson from ND in round one, to finally put the pieces in place to dominate like other teams do along the offensive line. But as long as they can build the line with cheaper options and be successful, I’m not gonna complain. I really do believe Davis, Tunsil and Smith will be part of a very good group in 2018. I’m looking forward to next year just to see these kids play.
