Miami's history for getting the player it really used to be good, real good then things changed a lot, from bad to worse to depressing. What changed was ownership, management and coaching which led to terrible decision making to blatant outrageous and desperate signings and contracts. Gone are the days when of Keith Jackson and Keith Byars. Players that really did what Free agency were supposed to do-fill needs.

Nowadays, teams especially our beloved Dolphins try to build through free agency rather than the draft and the results have rather been atrocious. Free agency is supposed to be used to address glaring needs that won't be in available to find in the draft. When elite players become available you sign them to upgrade a position-that is all. Names of bad free agents Miami had signed are long but the scariest thing now is their FA signees are breaking down like Chinese made car. The top three FA pick ups of 2014 went down to injuries, ditto for 2013 and the ones that don't get injured just don't do much to help the team. One has to wonder is it bad luck or bad scouting ?

Some is bad luck but giving ellerbee big money was plain stupid, esp when his own team balked at the asking price because we outbid ourselves.
I cannot fault the Albert signing we needed a player some of the others not as fond of like paying Shelly Smith any kind of money.

depending on FA? what % of FA's work out?

when guys get paid(guaranteed money), for the most part their productivity goes down. its human nature dude

I felt Hickey was desperate in Free Agency, given the mess he was handed. He HAD to get the best OT available and he did that. He had to deal with year 2 of 4 tough contracts (Wallace, Hartline, Wheeler, Ellerbe) and that really hurt his ability to do anything major. He had to roll the dice on guys who have proven in the past that they are solid players . . . even if injury prone/past their prime.

I liked the gamble, unfortunately it did not work out . . . but he at least showed he does have some competence when it comes to the draft, which is by far more important than free agency. If Jeff Ireland can get 4 or 5 drafts, Hickey damn sure deserves a 2nd one and I really hope he gets it.

It was exactly that, "a gamble"

I'm ok with Albert. We needed a LT and even though he's been injury prone it was a risk he had to take but the problem is every single player he got in free agency was injury prone so that's the real problem. As far as the draft I think he did good. I totally believe he deserves a chance.

The key is learning from last off-season. Find solid free agents who won't break the bank, but please please please, stay away from injury plagued players. Guys with injury histories tend to continue to have injury histories. And as far as the draft, I like what he did, I just hope he avoids too many small school prospect types and goes for more proven guys who will be able to contribute more in some way. That's my only draft gripe.
