The Miami Dolphins desperately need help in fixing their 30th-ranked run defense this offseason. According to second-year head coach Adam Gase, part of that solution is in-house.

Gase said the Dolphins will lean more heavily on 2015 second-round pick Jordan Phillips next season. The defensive tackle was up and down as a role player last season. But Miami's coaching staff is counting on increased reps -- about 45-50 snaps -- and a starting role in 2017 opposite Pro Bowler Ndamukong Suh.
"We talked about it before the end of last season that we need to get his reps up," Gase said of Phillips on Thursday at the NFL combine. "Twenty-five plays a game is not really going to do anything for us. So we need his snaps to get up, and we have to shorten the snaps on defense altogether."

The kid has flashed, but really needs to be more consistant. Does make it sound like we will not be going after a big time free agent DT. Although I expect a rotational signing.

He certainly has the talent. I remember his scouting report coming out of Oklahoma saying the he came from a small town in Kansas I believe and he was always so much stronger and more athletic than everyone he competed against he never spent the time honing his craft because it came so easy for him. Even at OU he had similar issues getting by on sheer talent.

At this level he needs to put in the work, which goes for his 2015 draft classmate Devante Parker as well. Those two guys need to burst onto the scene in 2017 for the Dolphins. If they prepare their minds and bodies properly sky's the limit for both. I like both players and will hold out hope good things are coming with more maturity.

This does lead you to believe we won't invest heavily in a DT with a high draft pick or FA $$$. Like you said, we need to find another body. I could see a FA signing and maybe a 5th rounder added.

Headline is a little off-track. He will get A CHANCE to have an increased role. Same chance he had in 2016 when he had to split snaps with some of the worst DT's in the league.... and Mitchell even missed 2/3 of the season.. Puff-N-Stuff needs to do some cardio from the sound of it.

Reminds me of Jimmy Johnson's line....Fatigue makes cowards of us all.

The headline was from ESPN....

Phillips averaged more than 25 defensive snaps per game
now if Gase means 25 GOOD snaps a game...I understand that

You depend on Jordan Phillips, you'll be looking at another poor rush defense in 2017.

It's not just Jordon. It's our defense.

1st & 10, we're are in our 4-3 base vs 12 personnel. All the offense has to do to gain an immediate advantage to run the ball is motion a WR to the opposite side vs zone or flex the TE vs man to cause one of the OLB's to walk out and cover the receiver, or at least to keep the receiver from having a straight line shot at the secondary. Now you have a gap unaccounted for vs the run and the line MUST run a stunt to try and cancel out that gap, but at the same time that makes them susceptible traps and counters. It's almost a guaranteed 4+ yards with minimal execution by the offense.

Sound familiar? It should as that is just one example of our scheme flaws vs today's modern hyper-flexible offenses that led to the #30 ranked run defense. Just about any other scheme (4-3 Over, 3-4) doesn't have these issues.

Either way, whether Phillips takes his game to another level or not, Miami badly needs depth at defensive tackle.

Counting on Phillips as the starter, based on what I've seen so far, would be a mistake. He could become a good player, but you've got to bring in legitimate competition IMO.

signing a guy like Brandon Williams might be the way to go. but he will be pricy

Problem with Phillips is even if you consider him an ascending player, which we all do considering he's only 2 years in, he's not ascendng at the rate you'd like to see, some people may not agree with me but I actually think he regressed against the run in year 2, while only slightly improved getting after the passer....but he needs to improve by leaps and bounds this year if he's truly to be counted on. I mean I'm not exaggerating when I say he wasn't all that much better than Mitchell.

Hate to compare him to guys like Jon Martin and Billy Turner but I'm getting that same type of vibe here, similar situation with a high draft pick showing flashes but overall a disappointment, staff/front office sees the player as being better than he really is... OR they expect some massive improvement that in their minds is sure to come just by giving the guy more reps and opportunities so they don't really address the position or try to upgrade there.

I think this is an example of Gase motivating players in different ways based on their personalities. With Ajayi Gase had to humble him. With Phillips it seems like he is trying to motivate him by showing confidence in him developing. It remains to be seen whether it works but I trust Coach.

This is his make or break year I think. If he doesn't show major improvement he most likely won't be a dependable starter for us.

I'd sign a 1-tech NT/Dt and 5-tech DT/DE. Make JP earn snaps at DE/DT, if he gets embarrassed at DE maybe he'll learn to play like a real pro at DT.

I was watching a presser a while ago, and I think it was Burke that said this... and sums it up pretty well... if you put a highlight tape together of Jordan Phillips you would come away convinced he's the best player in the league, needs to work on consistency..... and I agree with this, if you watch some of his best plays, they just blow you away...
