Miami Dolphins linebacker Jelani Jenkins wasn’t shy to admit that his best play – a tackle for loss -- in Thursday's preseason opener against the Chicago Bears was almost entirely due to someone else.

“Ndamukong Suh did all the work,” Jenkins said with a laugh. “He just makes it easier. You all saw it. He’s a monster; he’s always been. That specific play, I didn’t get touched. I just ran through full speed and [the Bears] were so busy trying to stop Ndamukong that it freed me up.”

The Dolphins finally got a chance to experience the “Suh effect” in a game situation.

Suh played just seven snaps with the first-team defense. But that span included Jenkins’ tackle for loss, a false start by the offense and a sack by defensive end Cameron Wake, although that play was called back because of injury. The Dolphins expect to see more of that throughout the season.

“Those are some of the things that may not show up on a stat sheet, but I think when you watch the tape, hopefully there’s an impact on a lot of different fronts,” Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said. “Certainly we want to see the impact plays like sacks, the hurries and so forth. But there’s other ways to make a difference in football.”

Having Suh is going to make Jenkins go from good to great. He's going to establish himself as one of the best 4-3 OLBs in this league, we just need to get solid play from our boring ass mike(s).

That's just the thing. The Will is the playmaker in our offense with more free reign, followed by the Sam who is mainly responsible for TE coverage or shedding his blocks. The Mike is not a primary position in our 4-3 in terms of play making ability as he serves more as the QB in the defense in making calls and adjustments.

And then when you take into consideration the pass-happy NFL and the frequent use of nickel packages, the Mike isn't even on the field.

'Suh effect' ..... sounds like a geological study of a cataclysmic catastrophe that has crushed everything in it's wake while simultaneously enabling other natural disasters to unimpededly cause great havoc on their environment.

Suh will help our defense but he will not make subpar defenders or defense anything special by himself. he was in detroit along time and their defense was only too level once and average to below average every other year

Debbie's gonna downer.

Debbie also doesn't understand the impact of a great DT and where the game is won and lost.

He didn't have anyone close to Wake on the DL either... Suh by himself might not make a defense great... But Suh AND Wake on the same DL... that's a whole different animal...

The Mike in this defense seems to be the safety valve floater guy. Which is probably why they feel comfortable with Shepard, Coyle likes to sugar the gaps with the LB'ers the Mike may blitz rarely but is there to sure up the run stop and watch for anything over the middle so if the Sam picks up the TE provide extra help. The magic of Suh let's you do so many more things. And to tell you the truth Shepard at Mike may be the best move as he seems to be able to call out the defense better than Misi but is not as talented as Misi but Coyle can mix and match with ease because the whole DL is on automatic so he can concentrate on LB'ers and the secondary showing more exotic stuff. Coyle must feel like a mad scientist right now, I know I would.

I wish we had a sign that read "Don't feed the Debbies" because he posts that kind of stuff in every thread. Suh undoubtedly makes this defense better.

I also just thought how much the safeties won't have to do so much run support. If Dline and LB's are killing the run they are free to support the CB's better, cover TE's trying to eat the seam better, hang back better so they don't get busted over the top. So much of a domino effect when you can get so much done up front.

Too level?????

Detroit was top half of the league in defense the last 3 years.......reaching no. 2 overall last year....I don't call that "level"....but maybe you have a different definition?

Here's another effect of the "Suh-effect" that I noticed. The football gurus on the board can correct me if I'm not seeing what I think I'm seeing. GAP CONTROL!

It seems like Suh and his protege Phillips line-up and rush from a "slanted" angle on most plays. Not just nose-to-nose against the offensive player.

The Suh-Effect has already been explain in the article and what it can do for players like Jenkins. However, it seems like to me that it can also be EXPLOITED

Interestingly, CK pointed it out awhile ago when we first got Mitchell from Houston and what he pointed out was more noticeable as the season wore on. He's a great player with a high motor. BUT, because of his tendency to penetration the line the way he does it can create gap control problems. Often times leaving chasms in your defensive line.

When Suh/Phillips do their bull rush thing from an angle specifically they tend to leave gapping holes on the back side of their rush angle (Hope that makes sense. Wish I had video stills to illustrate the point). When they guess right such as in the case of Phillips for the tackle for a lost in the back field. It takes them straight to the action crushing the offensive play. However, when they are wrong and what I fear schemed for say with a "counter-type" play..LOOK OUT! There is a "huge" cut back lane waiting for the defender.

never said once that suh doesnt make defense better but instead of discussing what was said you just do your usual baseless name calling without any substance. just another guy that uses a term he doesnt truly understand

well if a great dt has such an astounding affect on wins and losses what happened all those years in detroit. football is a team game so spare me your ignorant use of something that doesnt apply. if your team is a winning team and you criticize it might apply but not when your team hasnt fielded in winner in half a decade lol never said once he doesnt make our team a better team just he will not make a subpar player good all of a sudden. jelani jenkins should prosper because he is a good player but misi is going to misi at mlb. the game is won and lost all over the field. Seattle has a great defense and its not because they have the best dt in the game
