Miami Dolphins safety and Houston native Michael Thomas is giving back to the Houston community this weekend.
After holding his annual football camp at WW Thorne Stadium in partnership with APEX Academy and former Michigan State football players Kaleb Thornhill, the Dolphins’ director of player engagement, and Travis Key that included college preparatory panels, football skills and personal development workshops, Thomas is getting involved a “Walk for Prayer” intended to end violence.
Thomas will attend the event at Mt. Horeb Missionary Baptist Church in Houston that was organized by Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a Democrat from Texas, in the wake of the deaths of five police officers in Dallas that was preceded by shooting deaths of African-American men at the hands of police in Louisiana and Minnesota.
“My second annual ‘Camp Mike T’ introduced unique opportunities to kids by exposing them to computer science, SAT/ACT prep and filling out college applications,” Thomas said. “The surprise visit from Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee sent a powerful message to kids that someone of such importance and responsibility cared about them and their community. I think camps that combine sports and education help bridge the gap of continued learning outside the school year.”
Jackson Lee is a senior member of the House judiciary committee and a ranking member of the House judiciary committee on crime, terrorism, homeland security and investigations.
“We mourn the loss of our five Dallas police officers and we walk in prayer to end all violence,” Jackson Lee said.
