I know it's the Browns but a growing number of teams (including our Fins) are starting to embrace not only analytics but unorthodox organizational structures as well. I think we're on the right side of this movement. I'm a daily fantasy sports player for 3 yrs now and I can tell you that although watching film of every game, every week gives me an edge, the metrics available now are much more advanced than when I started. Both together has made my roi grow exponentially. MIA just might be heading in the right direction for the first time in years. IMHO.

Woops! My bad. He's brought in a Harvard analytics wunderkind to take the Browns over the top in terms of commitment to advanced metrics and strategic thinking through the organization at a time when many NFL clubs dabble with it, but where it's been viewed largely as an outpost for non-playing nerds, with neither the coaching side nor football operations truly embracing it or really knowing what to do with it.

Marrone is an analytics guy.

No he is not. He claimed that he was but he coached about as old school as you could possibly get. He wouldn't go for first downs on fourth and short on an opponent's side of the field even in obvious "go for it situations". Joe Philben played the odds in game situations way better than Marrone could ever dream of. It was one of Philben's only good attributes as a head coach. Marrone would be a nightmare hire.

if sucking ass constantly is leading edge, then I guess so

The eye test is, and always will be, the way to go. Analyctics is just dumb. IF you see the guy playing ball, he's playing ball. Analyctics is WORSE than overthinking.

Just dumb? Really? The eye test is the end all be all for professional football player forecasting now and forever? That's what group think at the time thought about the forward pass.

You mean to take a once iconoclastic sports franchise and beat them into the ground with a series of 5 and 11 seasons?
To hold on to Weekend at Bernies coach - A corpse on the sideline - and turn us into the laughing stock of the league?
Yeah we are really on the cutting the edge!
Ross YOU SUCK! You stole my team from me - and I hate you for it!!!

Analytics help but they are not everything. Analytics do not tell you whats inside the head of these players.
The Memphis Grizzlies fired their old coach because the gm was all about analytics and that team since firing the coach has gone nowhere.

At the end of the day analytics are a useful tool to help you but it's not the 100% must follow system because it never fails.

Analytics won't tell you the health of a player the emotions of that player these guys aren't just numbers on a screen they are human beings and I think the scientists forget that.

Agreed. But then you're saying not using analytics and relying on the current system as the must follow never fails? Balance and vision usually wins the day no?

Analytics are amazing for baseball, because it's much easier to analyze a player's performance in isolation.

It's much, much harder to analyze a football player's performance in isolation, because you can't. You have to try to separate the player's individual achievement from scheme, surrounding talent, etc.

Football Outsiders is a neat site, but it's an absolute joke to think that DVOA and DYAR are predictive of jack ****.

You make a great point. Even in baseball how many championships has Billy Beane won ?
