1) OT Jake Long, Michigan
Everything the Dolphins have failed to be the last 5 years: big, mean, productive, and hard-working. Does he have the feet for LT? Maybe, maybe not. The worst-case scenario is that you’re stuck with a perennial Pro Bowl RT for the next 10 years in the mold of Jon Runyan and Jon Jansen, two former Michigan OT’s.

2) LB Quentin Groves, Auburn
Parcells & Co. are keeping a close eye on Groves as a stand-up LB in the 3-4 should they decide to bypass Vernon Gholston and Chris Long with the #1 pick. Groves needs to pick up the intensity a few notches to compliment his athleticism, but has the size and speed to succeed Jason Taylor on the outside.

2) QB Joe Flacco, Deleware
Flacco’s size, pocket-presence, and strong remind me of the Texans’ Matt Schaub. Like Schaub, Flacco may need to marinate at the bottom of the depth chart for 2 few years. In a QB dominated league, having 2 players with the skill set of Flacco and John Beck increases the chances of success.

3) TE Martellus Bennett, Texas A&M*

With 9 TE’s projected to go in the first 80-90 picks, there is no excuse for failing to land a starting-caliber prospect in the first 4 rounds. Bennett doesn’t have that one specific skill that separates him from the pack, but appears to be the best 2-way player at 6’7, 260. Keep in mind Bill Parcells’ first pick of the 3rd round in his first draft with the Cowboys: TE Jason Witten.

4) LB Shawn Crable, Michigan
Although Crable is a productive athlete from a big-time school, he lacks a true position at 6’4, 245 pounds. He’s too lanky right now to be an every down OLB in the 3-4, but could steal 5-10 snaps a game from Joey Porter and succeed him by 2010.

6) WR Dexter Jackson, Appalachain St.
A poor man’s Deion Branch in the slot. He can return kicks, too.

6) G Brandon Keith, Northern Iowa
A massive road-grader at 6’5 – 345. Didn’t exactly dominate at Northern Iowa and was outplayed by teammate and projected late-rounder Chad Rhinehart. All in all, he is the perfect size-power project for Tony Sparano.

7) DE Bryan Mattison, Iowa
Overachiever who plays with great technique. Could stick as a 3-4 DE.

7) OT Tim Butterworth, Slippery Rock
Butterworth interviewed with the Dolphins’ braintrust in March and would prefer to pick him here rather than fight for him on the free agent market.

Fire Away!

That is a nice looking Mock IMHO....I'd be stoked with that!

Great mock!!! I love your first three picks. I might go with Curtis Lofton, Oklahoma LB, as our 3rd rounder if he is still there, but Martellus Bennett at TE would be great as well.

If we pass on Groves I hope we go after Lofton.

I agree, CB is a HUGE need that needs to be addressed here somewhere. Crable won't go that high IMO so give us one there at least.

I'd at least go CB at round 3, and TE in 4, and drop Crable all together

CB IS a need, but we have to come out of this draft with a TE. The crop is just too rich in the 2-4 rounds to come away with no one.

I see Crable as strictly a value pick/project in the 4th round. In a 3-4 defense where edge-rushing OLB's are key, having Crable and Groves learning behind JT (35) and Porter (31) seems very interesting to me.

I would love that draft! The reality is that your picks 2 through 3 will be long gone by then. Groves may have been ahead of Long and Gholsten if he had not been hurt his senior year. If we trade JT then I hope he would be our target but again most likely we would have to get back into the first.

Why does everyone insist on drafting another QB so early in the draft? We have a QB! We have far, far too many other needs than to take another QB. There's no need to take another shot at QB, when we could get a very solid LB or CB with our 2b. Fill the other holes on this team, before we start panicking over a rookie QB with a few games under his belt.

I don't think it's neccesarily "panicking". And you bring up a GREAT POINT - we DO have bigger needs in the 2nd round, considering we drafted John Beck in the 2nd round last year.

My thought process:
This is a QB dominated league. The top-rated QB's in the AFC last year were Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, David Garrard. Well.. the Patriots, Colts, Steelers, and Jaguars combined for a record of 51-13. Having TWO QB's with great potential AND an OL of Long, Carey, Satele, and Smiley gives the Dolphins a long-term chance to win in an AFC dominated by the passing game.

Is John Beck the answer? Maybe. But if he's not, we're NOT going to compete in the AFC for YEARS.

If Flacco is there at 2b we would be crazy not to take him but there are alot of teams with QB needs before us in round 2 that could take him.

I love the Tim Butterworth pick based on his name alone......mmmmmm....Butterworth.
