For those saying Miami doesn't have the money for a trade like this, thats not really true.
I am no advocating for this trade.
However, if there's no money for a trade like this then there is absolutely no money for a Wilkins extension.
If you want to extend Wilkins, then you can make this trade, of course you're saying Lawrence and his cap and lost assets are more valuable to the team then Wilkins
This brings up the Wilkins debate.
Wilkins
Or
Williams/Hunt/Wynn or Jackson.
So a trade like this can be done but admits Wilkins is gone and atleaet 1 of our lineman.
Now a Tua extension and an Ogbah release is enough to get Miami cap compliant.
A post June release of Howard and trade or release of Baker is the money to extend your 3 big linemen plus, maybe your rookies.
So where the money for Williams or Wilkins.
Well this is where restructuring of Hill, Armstead and Chibb come into play. If we want to move on as early as possible from Chubb or Armstead, you don't touch their contracts. Hill is the best bet.
However, you are now filling the roster with rookie and minimum salary FAS which is not necessarily a bad thing considering the core of the team will be very competitive.
For the next 2 years you're now relying on creative extensions to stay cap compliant or ease the losses.
Griers 3 year contracts are what gives Miami this flexibility.
So a Wilkins extension is doable, or a Williams trade, but that cap space pretty much would hinder Miamis ability to acquire any significant FA for a few years.
By not extending Wilkins or trading for Williams, Miami will still have some cap flexibility without having to release or trade players they weren't expecting to. For the record, IMO, the way contracts were structured the expected players who's contracts were expected to be let go in the next twar or 2 are Armstead/Howard/Ogbah and Baker. So when I say players they were not expecting to lose, they were expected releases etc IMO.
So for me. No trade for Williams. Extend Williams/Hunt/ Wynn and Jackson FIRST. Move on to Van Ginkle.
After that, if there's any room start going from there. Heck, Grier may decide going for a rookie C is a better financial choice then extending Williams. Who knows. But for me, those are the main targets for extensions.
The offense makes this team go. Keep it in tact then worry about the rest
