Dolphins news and notes

The Miami Dolphins are the other team sources are eyeing as a potential quarterback-grabber in the second, third or fourth rounds. Miami has 10 picks total, including four picks in those three rounds, so they have the ammunition to do it.

The Dolphins missed the playoffs last year in part because they didn't have a good plan for life without Tua Tagovailoa. They signed Zach Wilson in free agency, but he's the only other quarterback on the roster. Skylar Thompson, the only QB the team has drafted since taking Tagovailoa in 2020, went 1-3 as a starter and is now a Steelers backup.

Dolphins deals on the horizon?

Speaking of the Dolphins, let's take a closer look at them.

Last year, Miami made Jalen Ramsey the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history in terms of average annual value. This week, GM Chris Grier is talking to teams about trading Ramsey because it's in "the best interest" of the team.

Last year, Miami inked Tyreek Hill to a new contract that gave him the most guaranteed money by any receiver in NFL history. This week, Grier is fending off more questions about potentially trading Hill.

Last year, Miami signed Tua Tagovailoa to the largest contract in franchise history. This week, Grier did not mention Tagovailoa as a team leader when rattling off a few names.

Last thing first: sources I talked to weren't that bothered by Grier's omission. One source said Grier "isn't wired for passive aggressive stances" and dismissed any potential controversy around it.

It is hard to imagine teams are going to give the Dolphins any reasonable compensation for Hill for Miami to move him. The 31-year-old just had his worst season since becoming a full-time starter and quit on his still-in-the-playoff-hunt team in the regular-season finale. Police were called to his home for a domestic dispute last week that saw no charges being filed and the case quickly closing.

And now Ramsey has played his final game for Miami. One league source said they were aware of Miami's interest in moving Ramsey as early as the NFL Scouting Combine in February. Another source believes the Dolphins going public is an effort to gin up a market for Ramsey that just isn't there right now. Teams like the Falcons and Raiders should have some level of interest if the price is right.

The three-time first-team All-Pro cornerback is entering his age-31 season and due $21.1 million in guaranteed money for 2025. The Dolphins are prepared to take on the $29.2 million cap hit to trade Ramsey next week (or before June 1), but sources say teams are balking at being on the hook for all of Ramsey's 2025 salary.

It seems if Miami wants to get a deal done during the draft weekend, the Dolphins will need to pay some of Ramsey's salary as well to facilitate the trade. Otherwise, Miami can just wait until June 1 when it can split his cap charge over two seasons and then deal Ramsey. If a team is still willing to pay his full salary, of course.

I just read an article in the Sporting News that suggested Tua is considering retirement. Not sure that means over the next few years, but that definitely opens up quarterback.

Put it this way, another concussion could force the issue. From Miami's standpoint, they should be prepared. Tua’s injury history is a concern.

My immediate thought is Milroe, who could be had at 13, or maybe end of 1st round. Does he make it to early 2nd? Does Pittsburgh take him in the 1st? That seems like the landing spot.

Milroe would be a gamble on greatest, as the quarterback with the most upside in the draft. Also, could be boom or bust. I know that pick early would upset a lot of fans.

It also could explain Wilson, which seemed like an odd signing. But he is still young enough to have upside.

Wait so ppl knew were shopping Ramsey back in Feb?????

Wtf is going on here man? Grier, why are you so ****ing incompetent at your job man. Ross, whyyyyyyyyyyy do you keep this man employed. Good effing God man...

Another damning of Grier is his wholly inopportunely timed extensions of Ajax, Ramsay, Tua, Hill - all of them were bad extensions… his only good extension was Sieler.

1/5 in extensions… also the rating would give him for the “rebuild”.

Also @SF Dolphin Fan anytime you think someone, especially at the QB position is “boom or bust” you are guaranteed a bust. Guaranteed.

Milroe could be decent in 2-3yrs as a backup and 3rd round flyer. Anything earlier is a burned pick.

This is one of those drafts where the best QB will probably ending up being one picked after the first round. As a U fan I love Cam Ward, but he's not a slam dunk. Dolphins need to pick one somewhere between round 3 and 5.

Man, Grier really screwed us last year with the Hill and Ramsey deals. Why didn't he just leave it the way it was? Another bonehead decision by that clown.
And a lot of people around here were defending it, tell us we needed to get them locked down because that's what you do to your core players.

Some of us on the other hand warned this.

Ok ok. Either way, we are where we are and need to find the best way out at this point. Like others have said, this should be the year to eat the most of these stupid contracts...

There are some similarities between Josh Allen and Jalen Milroe, including work ethic. Scouts are raving about Milroe's leadership abilities and apparently he's one of the top interviews in this class.

Allen coming out had inaccuracy issues like Milroe, but has become an elite NFL quarterback. Was that work ethic? Buffalo being patient? Good coaching?

Honestly, watching Allen early in his career I thought his ceiling was a mid-tier quarterback. Man, was I wrong. It has me looking differently at quarterbacks and not just dismissing accuracy issues.

Im not advocating for Milroe. I don't particularly care for this quarterback class either, other then I think there are some potential backup options. Howard and Leonard are intriguing to me and less expensive in terms of draft pick compensation.

But Grier is a gambler. Milroe might be the ultimate gamble on greatness pick in this draft.

Allen isn’t the qb he is if he didn’t getting traded drafted to a team with someone like Daboll who was able to work on him. Even when he left Allen started to go down the turnover path until Joe Brady was able to reel him back in and change a little bit how they play. Milroe is the same way but a much bigger project. Going to depend where he plays, who he works with and how long he has to sit. I don’t think he can come out and play like Allen or else he’ll be boo’d out of the league before he ever has a chance to improve.

I do not understand what people see in Milroe.

No touch and questionable accuracy. It’s just a waste of a pick

In a way, I feel like Milroe is a year behind Hurts developmental wise coming into the draft. Hurts really benefitted from that transfer to Oklahoma.

I agree. It depends on where he lands, and I don’t think you start Milroe right away. I keep thinking Pittsburgh is the spot for him. Tomlin has seen Lamar Jackson, so he knows first hand what an elite running quarterback can do.

I have no idea I'd Milroe develops into more than a Kordell Stewart type, which is one comp I keep hearing.
