Jordan to stay at DE: The Dolphins are set at defensive end with starters Cam Wake and Olivier Vernon but the linebackers’ struggles from last year carried over into the preseason opener. So why isn’t Philbin considering Jordan at outside linebacker when he returns from a four game PED suspension?
“We’ve used him some in some of those sub packages,” Philbin said. “But there’s only X amount of time that you have on the practice field and you have to decide how you want him to spend his time.
“One of those things we wanted him to practice on a continual basis is pass rush, get off, operating sometimes from 3-point sometimes from 2-point but rushing the passer. If you’re going to rep him and give him the opportunity to compete as a linebacker you’re taking him out of that element a little bit and there’s practice time. You’ve got to kind of put your money where your mouth is. If you want him to be a pass rusher and a guy that can be utilized in coverage as a linebacker in sub to me that’s where you’ve got to spend your time.”

Edit: my bad, I see this was posted already. not sure how to delete threads though.

stupid not to.. I thought the key to winning was putting your best players, on the field, playing 'together'?!

Meanwhile, elsewhere around the league...

First-round pick Anthony Barr should start at strongside linebacker, where he'll be featured as part of a defense that should be more aggressive than recent Vikings teams. While he was the defensive coordinator in Cincinnati, Zimmer sent five or more pass-rushers just 172 times last season (the seventh-fewest in the league), according to ESPN Stats & Information, but he'll bring pressure from more places than the Vikings did under Leslie Frazier. The Bengals, for example, blitzed a defensive back on 30 more snaps than the Vikings did last season.

I agree, its frustrating. Actually, i think it goes a step beyond frustrating and its safe to say our coaches inflexibility costs us games. Ideally we'd kick back to a 3-4. Even years after switching, we still have the personnel for it. It would allow us to play to our strengths and (hopefully anyways) minimize our weaknesses. Barring that, id love for us to move Jordan around the field to create opportunities for him. He has too much potential to simply relegate him to one specific role and bench him when he doesnt seize that role. Regardless, our staff refuses to think outside the box even as they potentially sit on the hot seat. Mind-boggling.

I don't get it at all. Only player on roster that can actually cover at TE.

People need to stop looking at NFL D's with the traditional 4-3, 3-4 roles and positions.

Almost every team runs hybrid packages to mismatch opponents. Jordan will be vital in the Dolphins hybrid packages and even as a 4-3 DE.

As for covering TE's, last year Jordan played a lot of TE peeling off as a stand up DE or hybrid package 'roamer'.

That is what makes Jordan the wild card in the D, when he stands up at the edge, QB has zero clue if he will edge rush, or peel off and cover the TE.

hmm maybe Jordan is not as good as some on this board think

I have a feeling he will be traded by the deadline.

if they think fede can be a part of the active rotation this year you may be right...and boy will we be selling low on a top 5 pick a year ago

I think that's the harsh truth people don't want to face. Guy has looked terrible every time he has seen the field.

he should work on dropping weight the month he's out...hit the cardio hard...but i bet that's now what they will ask him to do...pretty sure anthony barr is not running around at 275 lbs playing lb for the vikings...probably closer to 260...and it makes a difference

serious learning curve for dj if he made a full time switch to lb this late in the process...for this season at least

I mean people seem to think Coyle is so great except when it comes to the almighty Dion Jordan. people forget he did play 25 percent of the plays and wasn't exactly a force to be reckoned with. I mean Derrick Shelby stole playing time from him.
If he was this dominant pass defender many for some reason believe he is , im sure the dolphin staff would be smart enough to use him more in that role

I personally think Anthony BArr is a better NFL prospect than Dion Jordan, I know you don't agree.

the vikings have said barrs head is spinning learning to play lb...jordans would be too...barrs not as explosive as jordan without bad weight but he's probably got the better torso and frame for adding weight and carrying it well...

jordan would be late to the ball at olb while he learns the craft as well...have to learn to read guards and tackle movements etc...this teams hilarious they should have just drafted or got a mike damn backer in free agency and left misi at strong and then we could work with a athlete at weak that isn't all that instinctual...like i freaking said after watching that 2013 lb disaster

and if you are gonna use a top 5 pick and trade up in the process to do so make sure the damn guys a scheme fit

Keep him at DE. The transition is way too steep for him to head to OLB at this point.

What they should do is stop the madness of Misi in the middle and go back to what they had last year. It was not good last year, but this set up is worse. Plus, maybe a year into the system Wheeler, Ellerbe and Misi would have a better feel of what to do.
