As Bill Parcells was fond of saying, you are what your record says you are. However, as we here at this column are equally fond of saying, records can often be misleading, particularly for a team playing a fourth place schedule that has also won at least three games this season which it should have lost. The Miami Dolphins, at 7-5, may still boast a winning record, but a closer look reveals a franchise that, in a 32 team league, is 25th on offense and 25th on defense.

Translation: the Dolphins don't belong in the playoffs, and if they should somehow manage to wangle a ticket to the postseason dance, we can expect them to beaten in much the same fashion in which they were mauled by the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.

After giving up 475 total yards to the San Francisco 49ers a week earlier, Miami yielded a torturous 496 yards to Joe Flacco and the Ravens this time out.

Opposing offenses have figured out how to beat the Miami defense: instruct your offensive linemen to hold their blocks long enough for the quarterback to throw short and intermediate passes and force the Dolphins' ragtag collection of linebackers and safeties, many of whom were signed off the street or other teams' practice squads, etc, to make tackles that they simply aren't talented enough to make.

To be sure, the Dolphins have made tremendous improvement this season, and shown themselves a force to be reckoned with for the remainder of the 2016 season, as well as in future years.

But if they were to slip into the playoffs this coming January, the likely outcome would be for them to be demolished on the road by the very first team they play, much like their debilitating home loss to the aforementioned Ravens following their Cinderella season in 2008.

To have their bandwagon turn back into a pumpkin at Midnight and embarrass themselves in front of a national television audience is not an objective that we, as fans, should be wishing for. Rather than shimmying through the door, only to be beaten soundly by the first time they encounter is not a goal to set for our team. We want to enter the playoffs on a tear, bash the door down and then be the hunters, rather than the hunted, when we make the postseason.

To the old cliche, "Once you get into the playoffs, anything can happen", we say, horse manure - no team, wildcard or otherwise, that was ranked in the 20's both offensively and defensively, has ever won an NFL title. That's our story and we're sticking to it.

Your thoughts? :ponder:

And that is why I couldn't care less about playoffs. Not this year. Far better that we quietly miss them then to make them through the usual "if X wins, Y loses, and Z wins by 14 or more points....."

Don't need more public smearing. Say what you will, we just aren't ready yet.

NOW......with a well played offseason, we should be ready to rumble. Two, preferably three LBs, a couple corners, a DL or two, maybe a safety, and a couple of no bull****, solid O line guys....

We will once again be for real.

I'm 59 years old and have had two heart attacks within the last 2 years
not sure how much longer I'll be around so as a fan since1970

I want this team to make the playoffs any way possible
anything can happen on Sunday, plus I cannot root against
a team I've been a fan for the past 46 years

IMO, the author of that article can eat a bag of dicks.

I've enjoyed the 6 game win streak. Some wins weren't pretty, some had some amazing performances by some individuals(hopeful building blocks). However, this team does have holes that many wondered about since the end of the draft, and some teams are taking advantage of it. I hope we can slip into the playoffs, but won't be disappointed if we don't. I hope Tbum and Gase can be on the same page for player personnel so that we have a better chance at building a team that can be competitive short and long term.

Honesty I have heard this ra-ra some 20 years ago. Always a perennial playoff contender yet never good enough. And at times we got clobbered in the playoffs. All I heard from those 'football wizzards' (incl FH) "we just need another offseason" or "we have to be really bad one time to have a high draft pick".
Yeah, that worked out well - 20/25 years later.

I take my shot in the playoffs anytime. People tend to forget that we are having some injuries on D.

I hope you will be around for a loooooooong time but you just became the second person I put on my list "why the Dolphins should make the playoffs":

- for Wake
- for miamiron

I think this weeks game will be telling. If we show like last week stick a fork in us. If we win then lets get it done. Anything can happen in Dec. but if we get blown out by two playoff type teams in the first weeks of Dec. then we are what we are.

Show me a team that doesn't want a 17th game and I'll show you a pile of horse manure, like this article.

Not only are they a failure as a fins fan, but theure stupid enough to not be able to realize that the first 5 games threw our stats off track incredibly badly.

The NY Giants won 2 championships in years, they looked looked so bad, they were thinking of getting rid of their HC.

The Patriots early on, won a few championships, with an offense that just barely, and more times won on the leg of a FG kicker, not Brady (Translation: Very close games).

The Flacco lead SB winning Baltimore Ravens looked very average winning many close games.

Last year, the Denver Broncos won a SB with a a over the hill injured former Great QB, and a very average QB.

The NY Jets made it two straight championship games, while in each of those season needing help to reach the playoff.

What they all had in common was, once they reached the playoffs, they picked it up 10 fold, and played better then each opponent put in front of them.

They NFL consists of three season, the 1st is the regular season, and the expectations are to get into the playoffs any way you can, (there are no style points for best Offense or best Defense), just get in, but don't cheat.

The 2nd part, is obviously the do or die part of the season, where everyone starts clean, does not matter what you did in the regular season other then having to play games at home or away, but again, win anyway you can...other then cheating.

The 3rd is the Superbowl, where more then the last two, you win anyway you can.

So I don't care if Miami is the 32nd ranked Offense, Defense, and special teams...just get in the playoffs.

I want us to get into the playoffs. Even if we lose in the first round it'd still be great for the young guys that have never been to gain some experience that would come in handy next year. We're trying to change the culture and making the playoffs however you make it is a step in the right direction

Ozzy rules!!

we need try get into playoff this yr... their are no promise we are going be good next yr..... ask jets fans......

There are no guarantees for anything. A good offseason does not guarantee us a playoff spot next year. Just look at this season:
- Green Bay was slated to be a Superbowl contender. The question was actually who could beat them in the regular season. Now look at them.
- when Romo went down nobody gave a dime for the Cowboys - now look at them.
- Jets came off a 10-6 season and were supposed to be in playoff contention - now what?
