"Fine" isn't the best way to describe how a player is doing in training camp, but that's the word defensive coordinator Vance Joseph used when asked about linebacker Kiko Alonso's performance so far.
"Obviously the missed tackle, I didn't like," Joseph said, referring to a goal-line stop Alonso missed when he slipped off Giants running back Rashad Jennings' legs during Friday's preseason opener. "We had a bunch of missed tackles in that game Friday. That's expected. It's preseason. That should get rectified pretty soon."
Alonso — who became the starting inside linebacker after being acquired in a trade this offseason — and starting free safety Isa Abdul-Quddus missed critical tackles that contributed to the Giants scoring a touchdown on thetheir first offensive series of the Dolphins' 27-10 win.
Alonso, who had 43 tackles and one interception in the 11 games he played for the Eagles last season, is confident he'll get his tackling issues fixed.
"We're practicing that every day, and we have three preseason games," Alonso said. "We just want to keep getting better.
"We're going full speed and thudding up [in practice]. That's as close as you get in practice. When it comes to the game, we've just got to execute."
