The shutout by the Bills with the playoffs on the line was pretty hard to stomach last year.
Then I remembered we ended the prior year being shutout by the Patriots.
So it made me wonder what the odds were to be shutout in 2 consecutive seasons.
I found this article from sportingcharts.com that tracks this back to 1990.

http://www.sportingcharts.com/articles/nfl/how-often-do-nfl-games-end-in-a-shutout.aspx

How Often Do Shutouts Occur in the NFL?
In looking back at nearly 6,500 games since 1990 (including playoffs), we found a total of 198 games in which a team was held to no points scored during the game. This represents a rate of occurrence of just 3.1% or around 8 games per season.

So being shutout twice in 2 years is much more than the average.
The article also shows the the Dolphins are tied for 2nd worst with Tampa Bay in being shutout.
Cleveland is the worst with 16 and Miami/Tampa come in with 12

From 1990 to 2000 the Dolphins were only shutout 3 times, But since then we have had 9 shutouts in 13 seasons
Below is the shameful list

2001 season: Week 10 Sun Nov 18 2001 at Mia NY Jets 24, Miami 0
2001 season: Week 14 Sun Dec 16 2001 at SF San Francisco 21, Miami 0
2003 season: Week 14 Sun Dec 7 2003 at NE New England 12, Miami 0
2005 season: Week 11 Sun Nov 20 2005 at Cle Cleveland 22, Miami 0
2006 season: Week 15 Sun Dec 17 2006 at Buf Buffalo 21, Miami 0
2007 season: Week 12 Mon Nov 26 2007 at Pit Pittsburgh 3, Miami 0
2010 season: Week 11 Thu Nov 18 2010 at Mia Chicago 16, Miami 0
2012 season: Week 17 Sun Dec 30 2012 at NE New England 28, Miami 0
2013 season: Week 16 Sun Dec 22 2013 at Buf Buffalo 19, Miami 0

The last time the Dolphins shutout another team was way back in 2006 when we beat the Patriots 21-0
Prior to that it was in 2000 when we shutout the Seahawks 23-0
So we are over due to shutout another team by our standards and way over due by NFL percentages.

But it is pretty pathetic that in the last 13 years we have been shutout 9 times and only returned the favor twice.

for comparison sake let's look at the division teams since 2000:

NY Jets:
for(5):
2001 at Miami 24-0
2002 vs. Indy 41-0(playoffs)
2003 vs. Pitt 6-0
2009 at Oak 38-0
2009 Cin 37-0

against(5):
2005 at Den 27-0
2006 vs. Chi 10-0
2006 at Jax 41-0
(interestingly enough we were a playoff team that year even though we were shut out twice)
2010 vs. GB 9-0
2012 vs SF 34-0

New England:
For(8):
2003 vs. dal 12-0
2003 vs. Mia 12-0
2003 vs. Buf 31-0
2005 vs. TB 28-0
2006 at GB 35-0
2008 at Buf 13-0
2009 vs. Ten 59-0
2012 vs. Mia 28-0

Against(2):
2003 at Buf 31-0
2006 at Mia 21-0

Buffalo:
For(4):
2003 vs. NE 31-0
2006 vs. Mia 21-0
2011 vs. Was 23-0
2013 vs. Mia 19-0

Against(5):
2001 at SF 35-0
2002 at GB 10-0
2003 at NE 31-0
2007 at Cle 8-0
2008 at NE 13-0

so it looks like we are almost opposite from the Patriots and the Bills and Jets are middle of the road.

Shutouts are humiliating like the article stated. I think there is a difference. Not in the standings but in the mindset of the offensive players.

The Patriots were shutout 31-0 by Bills to start a season but they rebounded to win the Super Bowl. The shutout happened early in the season.
But I can't think of a another team that was shutout but then went on to win it all. Especially not late in the season.

Dolphins shut out the pats in 2006, week 14. Pats went on to lose in the afc champ game. Don't think that shutout affected them at all.

It sure did suck, especially being there! in the rain. cold. Hammered. Was really hurt

Putting up 0 is basically the same as putting up a field goal or two. A loss is a loss.

Its disturbing that they are all late season shutouts. Not good!

Only 2 SB champs have been shut out:

1974 Pitt 17-0 vs. oak(beat oak 24-13 in title game)
2003 NE 31-0 to Buf(beat Buf 31-0 later in year)

A renewed goal of the Tannehill era is to score a point in our final road game.

At one point I had some betting systems that dealt with shut outs and what happens the following week. I don't even remember what they were, although they are still being calculated in my Excel spreadsheets. I have it written down somewhere. Eventually those systems were shelved since the sample size was so small I couldn't rely on them.

SB losers to be shut out in reg season:

1970 Cowboys lost to SL 38-0
1973 Vikings lost to Cin 27-0
1982 Dolphins lost 3-0 to NE(snow plow game)

Looks like we finally broke the 8 year streak of not having a shutout and helped balance the ledger.

I'm not sure McKoy agrees with you. They attempted one pass in the 4th quarter, completely shutting it down with still 12 minutes left. Well, maybe he agrees but wanted his team to suffer the embarrassment of the shutout.

I don't recall ever seeing a team shut it down with so much time left before.
