Dolphins Pass Rush Called Most Improved

You really think he's worth what he is looking for?

Even if he is, which I don't see it in this circumstance, personnaly, I think you only make those type of signings if you feel you are, legitimately, 1 or 2 players away from championship contention.
Just saying. He's out there. We need DE help.

That’s true...but I still like what they did, and they have those picks next year to finish the final pieces. Here’s to Houston collapsing!
Yep, very much hoping Houston implodes, but that division isn't very competitive. I've said all along, we wouldn't target pass rushers until the 2021 draft, for three reasons:

1. The 2020 draft was absolutely a wasteland for pass rushers after Chase Young. Who knows, we might have gotten the second best one late, and no team even wanted him, he doesn't set the edge, not disciplined at all, and is strictly a situational pass rusher at this point. So wait until 2021, because the selection/tiers/talent pool is better then.

2. We're in a 2 year rebuild now, and 2021 is the second half of that. A defense without a pass rush tends not to do very well, so until we get that, we will not challenge for the division title.

3. This defense does very well manufacturing a pass rush through scheme, so let's give it a try with reasonably skilled players first before investing the farm into pass rushers who will either not succeed or be nearly impossible to re-sign if they do succeed. Let this be the final piece.

Pass rush deficiencies extend to long before Flores got here. I think we went into last season knowing it was going to be a major weakness. But also not much more of a weakness then years past.

I said in another thread that I was thankful for the Charles Harris selection. If he had panned out and was a force on the DL, there is a good chance this rebuild doesn’t play out the way it did.

I love the position we are in right now. Wouldn’t change a thing if I could about the last years for fear of not being exactly where we are right now.

Clearly the FO will be watching that Rousseau kid from UM intently this season, as well most of this board. Assuming they have a normal season.

From what I hear we reached for Clowney twice, the first time was in 2019 when the Texans put him up for sale and we had a deal in place that offered the Texans a better 2020 draft pick then what they got from Seattle, second time I hear we offered him 17 mil on a long term deal and he was looking for 19+ and still throwing shade our way, so we went out and got Ogbah and Lawson, money spent so I doubt we reach again.

Flores 2018 season as New England defensive coordinator he had an uncanny ability to manufacture a pass rush using just about everyone on the defense, I'm sure he is going to try to duplicate that here. Really was special to see and he didn't rely on a pass rush specialist, scheming a pass rush.

Would be nice to see the product on the field before handing out laudatory comments ....

Will we be better - sure .... likely significantly better - yes, but how does that stack up ... who knows ...

Don't get me wrong. I love Flo, but that 2018 Pats team ranked 30th in sacks with only 30 for the team. They did a lot of other things well, and were often playing with the lead, so there was no need to be aggressive, but to say he had an "uncanny ability" to "manufacture sacks" really is overstating something at which they weren't that productive.

I don’t see 1 pro bowl- let alone all-pro caliber player in the Front 7. Outside shot VanNoy?
“Respectable” is a positive term that comes to mind. Ogbah, Lawson, Godcheaux, Wilkins, Baker. Etc
All OK. Respectable. Not game changers.

The Secondary is loaded. I think it’s a top 5 unit -especially high on the Noah Iggy pick. The kid Jones will see the field and Byron is a top 5 CB.

So here’s my positive take:
Average front: Grade C
Excellent secondary: Grade A
Excellent coaching/ scheme: Grade A
Overall Defense: B... B+ upside?

Improvements have been made. Our defense really doesn't need to have any big name stud. Scheme and a team first mentality is what Flo wants. In my opinion a great team will beat a team of great players most days.

As a cost value comparison that only means something here Taco had 5 sacks last year on a crap team Clowney had 3 on the Seahawks... Is he worth the BIG money? Me thinks not.

Hopefully the Dolphins get quite a few coverage sacks with all the $$$ they've put into the secondary.

Supposed to have elite SPIN move...Whatever!
he really was an easy read coming out of Mizzoo, you could see clearly he couldn’t track the football, he was simply trying all sorts of experiments trying to beat the man in front of him, with no regard of the ball most of the time, first step, sure, spin move, sure he had one, but when you start seeing him trying the spin move over and over even though the tackle figured it out that’s a red flag..

I didn’t like the move at all, but at least we didn’t sell the farm to get him like we did with Jordan a few years earlier. I really was high on TJ Watt, of course that’s easy to say now, but I really liked his game and his pedigree. I also liked Reuben Foster at that spot too, so I would have been 50/50 there. Lol
