Cameron Wake got close to Brady on a couple of occasions in the first half of last nights game and recorded a sack, but the Dolphins overall pass rush was inadequate. Someone besides Wake needs to step up. Next weeks game against the Texans, will require our D-line to put alot of pressure on Qb, Matt Schaub. With a their receivers & tight end combination ( Andre Johnson & Owen McDaniels), the Dolphin D could be in for another long day...

From another thread on the same topic:

Personnel decisions that will hurt the Phins most this year on defense-

Not getting Antawn Barnes who was available cheap as a situational pass rusher. The guy had 1 sack, 3 QB hits and multiple QB pressures last sunday. Meanwhile, we settled for a done JT who's pass rushing days are long gone. Taylor is just a "body" out there these days, and a very old one at that. If Wake has a mediocre game or gets injured this defense has no pass rush and Barnes would have been nice ( I was complaining and starting threads on the need for another pass rusher during the last 8 months while many here were content with this defense going forward).

Not getting a good coverage safety and better corner depth. This will haunt them this year. This defense will regress this year and I knew it would happen if they didn't really improve in key areas.

Relying on Cam Wake to have a similar year to last year's breakout season was a big mistake. many players regress after a breakout season. Moreover, teams learn and study a player more after a breakout year.. and of course double him more ( Wake didn't do much in the final 4 games last year when teams gave him more attention as an example). And Misi is total garbage as a pass rusher as he has zero speed off the edge and no ability to turn the arc fast with his hips low. Misi only has 1 sack in his last 12 games after teams studied him after his first 4 games and realized all he has is a bull rush move and it's easy to stick block him.

Should have drafted Rob Gronkowski 2 spots later instead of misi as I said on the draft forum on that draft day 2 drafts ago. misi is just a dime-a-dozen player that you can easily find in rounds 5 and 6, or a very cheap UFA

so to sum it up. It's Wake or nobody. No one else on this defense has the capability to rack up sacks and QB pressures.

You're only true hope for QB pressure is to blitz Dansby and/or Burnett heavily and take a page out of the Jets playbook to overload sides with an army or heavy blitzes up the middle (look how often the jets send the house blitzing David Harris as well as Bart Scott their inside linebackers).

But of course then that really exposes the TE's to burn us more, backs catching screens which have always killed us etc... and exposes the weak secondary more (when including the crappy nickel corners we have and our piss poor coverage safety tandem of Jones-Bell).

We have little pass rush when in a 3 or 4 man line. Cam Wake has only one move and he is the only speed we have. Blitzing a LB will only make things worse. We draft big DL but never any fast ones.

The coaching staff is more to blame than the DL IMO. Brady was in hurry up offense and was getting rid of the ball really fast to tire out the DL. The Dolphins never adjusted, never slowed him down with timeouts, never disguised coverages, didn't drop guys into zone very well, and were simply outplayed/outcoached. The DL isn't going to get pressure on Brady by just bull rushing every down and staying in the same base defense that he can read pre-snap. The coaching staff didnt' get them prepared and didn't make adjustments.

wake was held all night

What was really frustrating is listening to Jaworski and co saying over and over again how Solder was dominating him. Then they show some isolation shots to try and emphasize their point. However, in every shot Solder is bear hugging Wake and wrestling him to the ground and no call. He got called for one and then gave up a sack on back to back plays. Actually, Solder should have had at least 4 holding calls against him in the 1st half alone.

A lot of shots of Wake on his belly with Soldier on top.

I'm not one to trash our D-line but man, "cornfed lineman" really comes to mind when looking at them out there. We looked slow and largely ineffective. I desperately hope it improves.
