The first thread was on rush productivity and player ranks. This is on number of rushes, grades, Sacks, hits, pressures, total pressures, and a comparison from how we did a year ago. I just listed the top pass rushers, starting with 2012.

Wake- 566 pass rushes Grade +38.7, 17 sacks, 23 hits, 46 hurries. TP- 86.

Starks- 488 rushes Grade +7.8, 4- 11- 21, TP- 36

Odrick- 566 rushes Grade -19.8, 6- 10- 21, TP- 37

Soliai- 297 rushes Grade -0.5, 3- 1- 8, TP- 12

Vernon- 289 rushes Grade -6.1, 3- 7- 11, TP- 21

Shelby- 109 rushes Grade -0.6, 0- 3- 8. TP- 11

Misi- 145 rushes Grade +3.3, 6- 2- 6, TP- 14

Burnett- 114 rushes Grade +2.3, 2- 6- 7, TP- 15

Total rushes- 2568 or 160 per game. Total pressures- 232 or 14.5 per game.

2013

Wake- 255 rushes Grade +13.9, 7 sacks, 8 hits, 26 hurries, Total Pressures- 41

Starks- 292 rushes Grade +13.1, 3, 6, 24, TP- 33

Odrick- 342 rushes Grade +15.1, 5- 11- 22, TP- 38

Soliai- 187 rushes Grade +2.9, 1- 2- 9, TP- 12 *Bonus for 4 batted passes

Vernon- 370 rushes Grade +0.3, 7- 4- 29, TP- 40

Shelby- 152 rushes Grade -4.6, 3- 2- 5, TP- 10

Misi- 52 rushes Grade -2.2, 1- 1- 2, TP- 4

Jordan- 144 rushes Grade +0.3, 2- 3- 15, TP- 20

Wheeler- 95 rushes Grade- +4.3, 1- 4- 17, TP- 22

Total team rushes- 1889 or 172 per game. Total pressures- 220 or 20 per game.

This year we are rushing the QB 12 times a game more, and getting 5.5 more pressures a game. That's a dramatic increase, and this is being done by more players than just Wake a year ago.

Also, in 2012 we graded out at +3.8 as a team which was #15. This year, the team grade is +41.3 which is #2 behind Seattle, and with Wake being hurt and off from a year ago.

just think if we utilized jordan more. he seems to have a nose for the qb, and I think at the very least the hurries and hit #'s would increase dramatically in accordance to his increased playing time.

thats some useful information there southbeach... good work thanks for sharing.

To understand the grades, PFF does their eyeball test in watching every player on every play, and giving him a grade on each of between a negative 2 to a positive 2. So, a pressure only counts as one positive play, and others where a player gets beaten on a block or misses a tackle will negate a good play. OV is a good example. He is getting the pressures but still has a lot of room to improve, as he did from last season's grade.

I knew we were better but, did not know it was this much better. The only two who are not much improved are Wake and Misi, who have been hurting and still playing well. Odrick is the shocker going from a negative 19.8 to a positive 15.1 in a year is hard to believe. Guess all of us saying he belongs at DT were on the money.

I still dont understand what qualifies these guys who do the grades.

why are their eyeball test any better than say yours or mine?

At worst, the time they put in doing it. They have watched the above players on film for 200 to 700 plays. I don't know about you but I'm nowhere near close, other than the OL, and they have me beat there as well.

In the next few days I'll put up a thread to go into details.

I don't know. The D.Jordan stats look awfully weak! Whenever, I've watched the guy play he is right there doing something...

I agree. I think jordan is making hay on his limited oppurtunities but that stat/rank/grade from PFF would seem to indicate otherwise.

I think we need more threads focusing on how ****ty our offense has been, because our defense (once again and again and again) is the strength of this team.

How is Vernon's 2013 grade so low? The only number that looked low to me was hits and his number of plays was comparable to Odruck yet his sacks and TP are high yet he's a +.3 that makes no sense something's wrong there IMO.

Thanks for the post bro it's awesome to see these stats. Pass rush appears improved. Wakes injury obviously affected him quite a bit this year, Odrick will probably replace Starks IMO this offseason. Sure would like to see DJ95 take Wheelers spot. He'd provide the coverage ability as well as the pass rushing ability. Got to get your best 7 out there regardless of position. Dion would improve, Wheeler is a pass rusher who doesn't provide sacks who gets beaten in coverage routinely and only tackles much smaller players.

ODrick definately passes the eyeball test. He was a good pick by the Trifecta. Parcells knows dline players. He can find them.

I would like to see Wheeler cut. No need to waste any more time with him. Draft another LB and move on.

DJ95 numbers across the board are higher than Soliai yet he's ten time lower graded. There's a flaw in the grading or an agenda, OV50 and DJ95 should have higher grades judging by the data presented, what gives?

I encourage everyone to think of D. Jordan in terms of Jason Taylor. Granted their draft status' were different creating expectations but Jordan is going to be a beast in year 3. Year two he will do some serious damage with Wake.

Jason Taylor's first season PT was similar to what you see in Jordan this year. Jordan's light will come quicker in year two IMO.

And Southbeach, Is the 2013 numbers current or projected to finish?

They are current through 11 games.

The numbers and the grades are completely different. The sacks, hits and hurries are blind stats on how many times a player puts pressure on a QB. The grades are based on the eyeball test on those plays along with every other pass rush play a player was on the field for.

All pressures are not created equal. A player going unblocked for a sack is not going to get the same grade as one who bull rushed his blocker into the QB in 2 seconds. An example would be if Wake beat 2 blockers to flush the QB into the waiting arms of Vernon. Vernon gets the sack but Wake was responsible for it. Who should get the better grade?

What happened on the other plays when there was not a pressure? Did the player beat his blocker or force a double team to free up someone else (Starks & Odrick do this often) or, get beaten and taken out of the play. They all count on the final grade.

If anyone has the Panthers game recorded, take a look at OV and/or Jordan to see what you think on all of their pass rush snaps and how many you would give a plus or minus to or go with a 1 to 10 grade. It would make it easier to understand how the grades are given.
