Dolphin's priorities via Armando

And again I have to point to Armando's article. We *have* ILBs on roster. And those ILBs are the same ones that didn't do so bad in 2008. So to pretend they're on the same level as an OLB roster that contains only Cameron Wake, Charlie Anderson, Quentin Moses and Erik Walden...I just don't see that.

ILB is not a "must have". That's not even a "need". That's a "want".

I completely disagree. Just because they are on the roster and starting does not mean they are not a need. Now one might be ok without the other, but the two together do not work.

161 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 int's and 1 FF.... That is the production Miami recieved out of it's ILB's, Yes all three of them combined. I'd say that there is more than a want at ILB. You said in an earlier post all we have at OLB is Wake, Moses, Anderson and Walden, well all we have at ILB is Crowder, Ayodele, and Torbor. All three of them disapear during games, don't make any big plays, and the tackles they do make all seem to be 5-10 yards down field, so I say Yes ILB is a need this offseason.

safe to say this is the year they will double up (at least) on lb in the draft

I agree and I would say that at least one ILB is a must have. I think Crowder and Ayodele could play off of another better LB, but together they are just not good.

I will add to the stats you listed for the last year. Only a total of 9 TFL, 1 FF, and 7 PD.

The 50 year old Ray Lewis pretty much matche the productivity from ALL three ILB from the Dolphins. I agree that ILB is a need and at least one upgrade is a must have.

I have to go with OLB and ILB before anything else. If you have guys who cannot tackle (Crowder/Porter) then it doesn' matter what kind of WR's you have. We have to fix the D first and make this a priority (acquiring Dansby, drafting McClain or Brandom Graham). We can always pick up a WR in free agency as well (Boldin, Austin).

Some statistics via Pro Football Focus.

2008: 184 Tackles, 87 "stops", 18 QB Pressures/Hits, 0 Batted Passes, 20 Missed Tackles
2009: 130 Tackles, 66 "stops", 21 QB Pressures/Hits, 2 Batted Passes, 21 Missed Tackles

So what happened? Did they suddenly get old? Did they suddenly forget how to play football?

Or perhaps were there some big changes at OLB, NT and Safety, along with scheme changes, that adversely affected not only the ILBs, but the entire defense?

It's on the wish list. It's high on the wish list, in fact. But it's not a "must have".

Can't really agree with Armando here. OLB and ILB are easily our biggest needs with a playmaker at WR probably 3rd followed by NT and FS.

I personally don't care what is fixed 1st, as long as we are able to get two good players at I-LB and O-LB.....if we could get Dansby in Miami, that would be big.

Parrothead, way off base. The ILB's can't cover any TEs, don't make big plays, and miss a ****load of tackles. HUGE need. You're bros with Crowder or something?

That is laughable. Look at the playoff teams. EVERY team has impact ILBs. Miami does not. In '08 the Phins got by on a better secondary and playing bottom barrel teams.

To take the next step this team needs ILBs. Yes, plural.

Those first set of numbers aren't even good for a starting unit of ILB's and their primary backup. It's not all about the numbers either, we all saw these three guys out of position way too many times, get eatten up by blockers, and look absolutely lost in coverage. Some of these things can be attributed to other areas but a lot of it is just terrible play at their position.

The key to a "great" Defense is the pass rush. I always point to the Giants beating the Pats in the SuperBowl. How did they shut down one of the best offenses in the history of the NFL? Did they have great safties or corners? No, some what the opposite IMO. They key was consistantly getting pressure on Brady. We need to improve the pass rush and Parcells knows it. He has a history of using high draft picks on such players. Ala LT, and more recently DeMarcus Ware.

why in hell cant we take a dt and free safety in f/a and get Boldin , and bring back McMichael and and keep Fasano and cut the other two tightends and carry two tightends and two fullbacks.

Defensive line ought to be address first then linebackers .

priority 1 wr
priority 2 tightend
priority 3 dt need 2 of them
priority 4 3 linebackers
priority 5 a big pass rushing specialist like Trace Armstrong
deal with the rest of our needs in undrafted rookies and f/a after the draft.

All will be solved if we can:

1- Sign Carlos Dansby via FA
2- Trade for Q with the cards
3- Draft Brandan Graham

We fix the WR/ILB/OLB and I honestly think it is very possible
