Besides pursuing Branden Albert, Dolphins also pursuing Roger Saffold for OL and calling others. 3 p.m. update: http://miamiherald.typepad.com/spor...gency-heat-um-football.html#storylink=addthis

The Dolphins also have expressed strong interest in St. Louis guard/tackle Roger Saffold -- something both colleague Adam Beasley and I are hearing.

And the Dolphins today also reached out to Oakland free agent left tackle Jared Veldheer, who missed 11 games last season with a torn triceps. Veldheer is an option if Miami doesn't sign Albert or Saffold or Monroe.

Two industry officials said they believe the Dolphins would love to sign Albert as their left tackle and sign Saffold as a guard. But Miami would have to pay substantially to achieve that.

In the meantime, the Dolphins also have reached out to Monroe and to Veldheer, who are both natural left tackles. And they haven't ruled out signing Saffold as a left tackle if they don't sign Albert.

Veldheer started 16 games for the Raiders each of the previous two seasons, and Pro Football Focus rated him 12th among all tackles in 2012, with a terrific plus-17.8 grade as a pass blocker and a plus-3.2 as a run blocker (25th best). Veldheer, a third round pick out of Hillsdale in 2010, allowed five sacks in 15 games in 2012.

Saffold did not allow a sack in six games at right guard last season and also graded out very well as a run-blocker.

Pro Football Focus rated him 20th among all guards this past season. He also has experience playing left tackle and allowed two sacks in 10 games at left tackle in 2012, before Jake Long took over the position last year.

I love how Miami is taking an "all of the above approach". Excellent. Miami is serious if they want an elite LT and Saffold at guard.

In Hickey's ideal world, Albert will be the Dolphins' starting LT and Saffold would play guard, per multiple sources.

That would be a PERFECT LT and G combo. Sign me up.

Sounds like we may have more interest in Albert than Monroe.

Man if Hickey can get Albert as the LT and Saffold as the LG, that would be a hell of a start to free agency. From center to the left would be solved and would just leave RG and RT.

Saffold hell yes... Albert hell no

Btw Saffold plays Left tackle, right tackle and guard. Him and Asamoah would be my wish list. Guys that are flexible position wise and very young

Here are some notes on Saffold the past couple weeks.

Profootballtalk reports contract talks between the Rams and free agent G/T Rodger Saffold are expected to "intensify" this week.
The Rams have made it clear Saffold is their top priority. After not slapping him with the franchise or transition tag Monday, the Rams only hold exclusive negotiating rights with Saffold until Saturday. Talks have reportedly been "productive" to date, but Saffold may be poised to test the market.

Free agent G/T Rodger Saffold's agent said his client will test the open market.
"Rodger definitely will be out in the free-agent market," Saffold's agent said. The Rams and Saffold talked this week, but Saffold likely wants to see if a team will pay him to play left tackle. The Rams want him to play right guard. Due to his versatility, we expect Saffold to have a healthy market despite injury concerns.

The player rep for free agent OL Rodger Saffold is telling people his client doesn't want to play right tackle.
Saffold either wants to be a guard or left tackle. Saffold's willingness to play guard increases the chances St. Louis re-signings him, because that's where coach Jeff Fisher believes Saffold best fits. If Saffold does reach the open market, "several teams" are expected to pursue him. He turns 26 in June.

It does based on the article. However, there are also basically three more days of this tampering period. Perhaps it is Miami playing the market and not inflating Monroe's demands? I do not care what the Baltimore papers write. Monroe and the Ravens are really not that far apart.

However, I have been a big Albert fan for awhile and have not issue with him protecting the blindside. One of the best in the business.

Saffold might get paid to play LT when this market settles down.

My only concern with Albert is health. If we do go with him, Saffold is our best option at G. He has LT experience, so he can move over if necessary. Still don't love Albert as a first choice though.

Good point on Saffold's ability to move out to LT. I was talking in another thread the importance of a back up OT.

I wonder though looking at the teams needing a LT if Saffold ends up playing on the blindside and making LT money.

There aren't any elite LT's available. Don't confuse better than average with elite

ew albert, good but not great, old and health concerns... and miami are about to add overpaid onto the end of that

He is an elite pass protector. Not confused.

neither monroe or albert is elite

I don't want Albert but ck is high on Saffold as a guard.. Give me one of the other 3 LTs, and Saffold and maybe another guard. Couple guys for depth too wouldn't hurt
