Dolphins re-sign Tyrel Dodson

Love this guy. Been hoping this happens since the end of the season. When I first opened my eyes this morning, I rolled over and grabbed my phone to check phins.com newsfeed in hopes of seeing this exact news, first and foremost. Any signings. So I was feeling good even before I'd gone to el banio and splashed water on my face.

Didn't realize he graded out so well.

In 2023, Milano got hurt early. Dodson stepped in and started the rest of the way, and for that season he was the top PFF overall LB in the NFL with an over-the-moon grade of 90.2. I was hoping we'd sign him last year in free agency.

I wanted to upgrade but also fine with this. He’s a decent player and was easily the second best linebacker on the team last year. Paired well with Brooks.

Honestly I’d prefer to have Dodson as a third guy/depth piece, but again, he’s a decent player and that’s a good value contract. Happy to have him back but hope we’re not done with LB.
If he ends up being the other starting ILB besides Brooks they complement each other very well. Brooks is your downhill run-stuffing slobber knocker. Dodson is your active, instinctive space player.

I had no idea he was this good. I'm surprised he got signed for such a low number

Good nickel LB and they aren’t easy to find. Now let’s get two DT. Hopefully we can upgrade over Benito.
I'd like to see both Hand and Benito re-signed to hold the fort, and then draft a couple of IDL out of this deep draft crop. Guys with initials instead of first names, CJ West, JJ Pegues, TJ Sanders. 2 of those 3 would suit me right down to the ground.

i have no idea how he did on his play to play assignments, but he made more clutch plays than i was expecting (i wasn't actually expecting any out of him).

and look at what the Eagles are doing now. Gone:
Milton Williams
Josh Sweat
CJ Gardner Johnson
Darius Slay
probably Bechton

They chose to pay Saquon and Baun and have to think about which free agents like Jalen Carter are coming up

Point is, there is a salary cap and it means you can't keep or sign every player you want.
Yeah, I mean you’re not saying anything contrary to what I’ve said. There is literally a salary cap. And I’m not advocating for 53 aging veterans on massive multi-year deals. The point is that the “cap” can be manipulated to allow you to do whatever you want to do — it’s just a matter of how much longterm cap gymnastics you’re willing to do to make it happen. The Eagles have already drafted over Milton Williams and Darius Slay, so it makes more sense to move on than to jump through cap hoops for a half decade to make it work with them.

I’m not suggesting the Dolphins should pay $26 million a year for a rotational DT. I’m suggesting they should fill holes and add game changers to a team that clearly wasn’t good enough in 2024, and they should push as much money as they need to push into the future to make that happen. Nothing is stopping Miami from adding 5-6 very good players by mortgaging $75 million of 2026 cap space.

You're right. Philadelphia is using this strategy extremely well. The problem with the Saints is that they also trade away picks, so they're not able to balance with cost-controlled talent, and they've missed on picks in recent years (largely because they've had fewer opportunities, because they keep trading away picks).

The salary cap is real, though. You still have to navigate it.
That also describes that team down in South Florida.

Sure, in some respects you are right, but as @Feverdream pointed out, it severely limits your ability to maneuver with your roster. What I don’t understand is the hypocrisy of the people on here that bitch about how bad Grier is and that they were worried that he would make desperation moves to save his job but are now angry that he hasn’t made desperation moves. We should be glad that he isn’t mortgaging the future for the next GM if this season should fall apart .
Yeah, the point about hypocrisy is fair. But that’s not me. I’ve never been concerned about Grier making desperation moves to save his job. My only red line is trading draft picks, and that’s not because it mortgages the future — it’s because it mortgages the present, too. Nothing is more valuable than good young players on rookie contracts. And that’s not even a cap thing — it’s because nobody plays harder than a great player who is making $1.75 million and hoping to earn a $50 million second contract.

To be fair we were really screwed with the tampering bs which cost us a 2023 1st rounder and 2024 3rd. Trading away the picks for Chubb and hill would of stung a lot less if we still had those picks like originally planned when they made those moves.
The only team ever to lose a #1 for tampering. Fcck that gawd damned Goodell all the way to Hades.
I feel about Goodell the way ChadRico feels about Grier. lol.
