Dolphins | Saban discusses fullback competition

MiamiDolphins.com reports Miami Dolphins head coach Nick Saban discussed the fullback competition between FB Darian Barnes and FB Fred Beasley. " I think it's a good competition. I think both guys are doing a lot of good things and I think that's healthy to have on your team. We're not ready to draw any conclusions about where anybody is. I think both guys have shown very well for us this year at times. Fred (Beasley) played better in this game than the week before and made improvement. Barnes has been an excellent blocker for us and has toughness. Both guys make a contribution. We want to keep the best players that we can, but there are other things that are considered in that too – their roles on the team, relative to another position, special teams and all that kind of stuff. You can't look at just that position myopically and not look at it a little bit more from 1,000 feet, relative to how we would decide to keep people at that position."

ugh it really doesnt answer any questions though, i was hoping he was gonna say wheter he would keep both or not

IMO the difference is that Beasley is more of a versatile threat .Defenses have to account for him.

Barnes is better blocker but no one games plan against him.

i personally think that we should keep Barnes at this point. also let Rader play some FB/TE/H-Back. he can catch the ball and block.

you guys are nuts. beasleys done nothing, barnes has been great. Just because he used to be a pro bowler (at a position to which there was no competition for the pro bowl slot) a few years ago does not mean hes better.

I'm hoping that we keep BOTH players. Beasley is a veteran player that is a triple threat on the field with his blocking/running/catching abilities, and is well respected in the NFL as a fullback and a leader. Barnes on the other hand is a better blocker, younger, tough, and a special teams player. He doesnt have great hands or running ability, but I'm sure Fred could mentor him and up his game. Barnes is just a BEAST from what I've heard.

Youth movement huh? I like both guys, and I maybe incline to agree, Beasley can only give us so much for so long, and barnes is coming into his own.

Alright i think theres a huge misconception of fred beasley here. Someone above said hes a leader. he is NOT. I assure you. Last season when mike nolan was named the new head coach, he quit on the team. He gained weight, and he lost his position. I don't remember if he lost it to injury or not, either way if he had came back, he wouldn't have been starting anyway. I don't hate the guy, but hes not what he was by any stretch. And someone who quits on his coach and his team, is not a leader.

Yup

Well if we are speaking on offensive terms in this offense. Beastley would prove us that he does have veteran leadership. He is a great catching fullback and a blocker though but do we really need him in this type of offense. Remember when we released a fullback within a couple of games during the season? Does that ring a bell? The one that ran all over our defense?

Anyways, the offense that we are using doesn't uses the fullback as much as beastley has been used in the past in a west coast offense. It will come down to who blocks the best and right now, barnes is a better blocker, however if we do change some philosophies in third down, Fred would be the best choice for third down if we go for a pass. It's complicated I know.

Is it really that hard to choose? If i'm not mistaken Beasley is a beast.

this is one of the toughest battles on the team..both guys doing a great job..if it comes down to who gets cut, i think beasley will be gone

but i hope Saban keeps both though..too hard to choose

i love Barnes and his blocking
