Dolphins | Saban testifies on Williams' behalf
Tue, 11 Apr 2006 19:37:01 -0700
Jason Cole, of the Miami Herald, reports Miami Dolphins head coach Nick Saban testified on behalf of RB Ricky Williams at his hearing Monday, April 10. According to a source, Saban spoke for about 30 minutes Monday over the telephone. Saban has consistently said that he will support Williams through this process, that he doesn't believe Williams used drugs in this instance, and that Williams is one of the hardest-working players he ever has coached. Williams' attorney, David Cornwell, declined Tuesday, April 11, to comment on the hearing, other than to say he was "optimistic." Cornwell did issue the following statement through a spokesperson. "During Monday's appeal hearing, we presented compelling evidence demonstrating that disciplining Mr. Williams would undermine the integrity of the NFL's Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse," the statement said. An NFL source indicated that a decision on the appeal could come as early as next week.

In the words of Ron Burgundy:

"That is GOOD news!"

Good to hear that Saban got to say some things.

Adam Schefter is reporting that a decision won't come until the week before the draft.

well that is good news...saban already has a good rep around the league so him backing ricky is great, and what his attorney said thats also great news.

Saban testified on behalf of RW. This could make the decision on the appeal. Great news !

saban really has been very vocal about ricky since this announcement came in.

and the news about a week b4 the draft i just hope it is b4 the draft even tho i doubt saban would draft a running back this year just in case ricky doesnt get teh appeal then if we saban feels like we need more depth he could always draft a rb

Does Saban know what substance he tested postive for?
My guess would be yes, after a player tests positive for a substance the league then allerts the team and I would assume tells them exactly what the violation was for.

Great to hear Saban testified...this may make it a little harder for the NFL to rule against him.

I like Saban supporting Ricky, but I doubt his testimony will have a heck of alot of power. He does have quite a few ulterior motives going on.

I like the example that sends to the rest of the team. The coach has got your back!

Absolutely, great point! Having a coach like Saban has to be attractive to players around the league... not only is he a brilliant football mind, he takes good care of his players and looks out for their interests as well. It must be wonderful to play for a coach like that.

Nice to see Saban sticking up for his players. Hopefully it'll sway the decision. But what a classy thing to do.
