More of a breakdown in the article.
Assuming a $143 million salary cap, the Dolphins have already jumped up to a little over $10 million in salary cap space for this season. Some more cuts are expected, which could add even more money for the team. Right now, this money can be used to re-sign players to contract extensions, or the team can use it to target free agents when the signing period begins on March 10. The Dolphins will also need about $5.2 million in space to sign their draft picks this summer, money which could come from the post-June 1 releases/designations.

Ellerbe, Wheeler, Starks, Finnegan...all can go.

Wheeler we can wait post June for . . . no savings to be had today. Cut him in June and use that money for draft picks. The other 3 frees up over 16 million in cap space, on top of the 10+ million we have right now.

Over the Cap has the Dolphins currently at 11.3M and sitting in 25th in terms of cap space.

I have not idea why Ellerbe and Shelly Smith are still on the team, those two alone would be another 8.4M.

Brandon Fields needs to restructure. 11th best punter in average per punt, 24th inside the 20, 30th for fair catches, and 27th for touchbacks (3).

Yea, $3.5 million (3rd highest paid punter in 2014) for a guy who just had a terrible season. He was great for a lot of years, but maybe it's time to cut bait and relish in the fact that we got Fields best years. Unacceptable performance last season at that price.

Agree on Fields. Too much for a punter and we need to check our kicker too. Too inconsistent for whatever he's making.

Ozzy rules!!

yeah he surprised me on what an awful season he had last year. he has been such a great punter for us too for many years... is he on the decline? or just a poor year?

/so far, seems like we 're looking to pay big for a CB, maybe a DT, mid range for a LB, and keep Clay and Odrick. Jackson reported that the team is keeping Smith to give him a second chance to start at OG.

Hard to see spending any other big money this year. We're good on the cap.

In fairness there was a time when it seemed Fields was the best player on the team, he was Top 3 in NFL punting for years. He has slipped and I agree his contract should be lowered but he still isn't the biggest problem in the the kicking game, that distinctions falls on Sturgis, I doubt he makes the roster the writing is on the wall.

that sounds great... except if we were only going 3 guys i think we really need that ILB and DT like you said. but instead of CB we definitely need the OG first.

I think they use the Fields card depending how deals come into place, may have to release or try to restructure at some point.
