After final cuts Miami is sitting with $14M in cap space. Barring injury or a surprise addition, this will be carried over to next year. It is debatable if the team should have spent more on this year's team.

Net year, we are over the cap by $3M, including the expiring contracts of Moore, Delmas, Moreno, College, Clay, Odrick, and Wilson. However the cap is projected to go up by around $10M, and Hickey can make many moves without the contract restrictions in addition to the carry over. Other than Albert and Grimes, Wallace is the only one questionable as we only save $2.5M by cut.

Where are all of the paranoid Dawn Aponte haters (cough, Hayden)?
This supports the case that there is some sensible fiscal management in the Dolphins front office.

I think it's pretty apparent what the team's thinking is. There's basically two options:
1) 2014 is a stunning success. If that's the case, Ryan Tannehill has played its part and is due a major contract extension. Here's where you need all the carry over money.
2) 2014 is a disappointment. Which means new coaching staff, maybe new GM, cutting ties with Tannehill and drafting the next franchise QB. In that case, you wanna keep carrying over money for this new QB.

I like this approach. You're saving your money until you find your QB. Then you reward him for carrying the team. That's how it should be.

According to cap tracker we have $20 million in available space right now, which is right? If the $20M figure is right thats too much imo, especially if its set to increase by $10M next year. If they think a free agent like Clemons is an upgrade I wouldn't be shy to bring him in just to save a little cash at this point.

Check the date on cap tracker. OTC updated yesterday, and I have always found Jason to be on the money.

Wow that's great!...what's that mean for next year?

Impossible to say. I think that just about everyone on the team is auditioning to be here next year. Depending on performance Hickey can blow things up, pretty much keep everyone, or anywhere in between. The young guys developing to be able to take over will be a HUGE part in his decisions.

I think cap tracker is up to date and the correct number.

The discrepancy is with the suspended players.

Overthecap.com has both suspended players' salaries included in the cap hit, and Sportrac has niether suspended players included in the cap, so both sites are wrong imo. Their base salaries do not count against the cap for the games they are suspended, but their signing bonuses do count. Neither website got that part right, but Overthecap is closer than Sportrac.

Thanks for finding that. I "think" that OTC has that figured in but, not sure. Jones lost $850K, and Jordan $105K by the suspensions. The two guys at the bottom of the roster get $420K each, and cannot be taken off the cap until the other 2 return. So it's basically nothing in a difference.

Nope, he came to his cap number of $140.74 million by adding in the full base salary and signing bonus of Reshad Jones and Dion Jordan, which would be incorrect (which isn't a big deal if just estimating cap space, but it does cause a discrepancy if you are trying to get the exact number and these websites are definitely trying to be exact). If you want to double check the math, you can highlight the whole OTC webpage and paste it into Excel using the match destination formatting function, and run a quick sum formula. You will see he included their full salaries.
