DAVIE – When Dolphins running back Knowshon Moreno was chewing up ground en route to his 134-yard performance Sunday against New England it wasn’t unusual to see right guard Shelley Smith serving as the lead blocker.
It turns out Smith was one of the hidden stars of the game.
Smith, who showed impressive muscle when blocking Vince Wilfork, the Patriot’s Pro Bowl defensive tackle, was even more impressive displaying his nimble feet and agility when he was running in front of Moreno as a pulling guard.
Smith’s play against the Patriots offers hope the Dolphins might have found the right man for the job.
“The guy is an athlete,” coach Joe Philbin said. “He can move his feet. He can get out, he can pull, he can play.

Footwork and Knee-bending. Playing with leverage. Its the thing I will look for for every OL on this team.

He looks smaller on the field than his listed 6-4 312 lbs., but the athleticism is evident. He's back at OG where he belongs and he's a HUGE upgrade over Dallas Thomas.

Where are all of the Finheaven O-line experts who regarded Shelly Smith as a terrible free agent signing?
Early days but he looked pretty good to me.

He is the key to the running game right now. Look at every runniing play and he's way out in front blocking on the 2nd level.

Funny how things work when we have the right personel for the scheme.

I think most people were saying that he was good in run blocking, but sub-par in pass protection. I don't think anyone really said he was an absolutely terrible all-around signing.

Hahahaha... guys on here thrashed our offensive line too early. These guys come to play and with Moreno running the ball anything is possible. He makes 2-3 miss everytime he touches it.

I agree that he has played the run well...but I believe Pouncey, if when he comes back is utilized as a guard if Satele keeps playing so well, will have an overall better performance.
