DAVIE  In the 5w months since L.J. Shelton signed his free-agent contract with the Dolphins, the left tackle has:... only taken part in about two dozen official practices;
... yet to play through the third quarter in any game;
... not heard or felt Dolphin Stadium at its most fervent - or frustrated;
... never gone to an early-bird special;
... not even had a chance to sit in the mind-numbing South Florida gridlock that can be I-95 at rush hour.

Shelton might not know much about South Florida or being a Dolphin, but the six-year NFL veteran is darn sure about one thing.
"I wish I had been in this kind of situation coming out of college, I really do," Shelton said. "I think I'm supposed to be here, at this time, with this team."
For the Dolphins, it had better be kismet. Because as the man charged with guarding the blind side of quarterback Daunte Culpepper, who is nine months removed from having three ligaments in his right knee pieced back together, Shelton perhaps has the season and the long-term success of the franchise riding on his back.

"There's no question L.J. has a big job to do - he's got to protect The Man," defensive end David Bowens said. "But so far he looks up to the job. I think he's going to do great."

You didn't add the best part of that story which is this --

Paul Zimmerman, the Sports Illustrated writer who has played and then covered football through the past 50 years, thinks Shelton landed in a perfect situation with the Dolphins after a year with the Cleveland Browns.
"I've always thought Shelton has had talent, I just thought he wasn't coached that well," Zimmerman said. "Shelton is one of those offensive linemen who can move a little bit and occupy a lot of space. Nobody's better with those kinds of players than (Dolphins offensive line coach Hudson Houck)."

Shelton, who is 6-feet-6 and 345 pounds, is similar in size to former Houck pupils Jackie Slater (Rams), Larry Allen (Cowboys), Doug Smith (Rams) and Erik Williams (Cowboys). Those four players went to a combined 27 Pro Bowls.

Shelton said he isn't looking for All-Pro status - not yet. After playing with Arizona, he wants to be coached the right way and he'll do the rest. So far, that part of South Florida looks beautiful to him.

"Being here just feels right, I don't know how to explain it," Shelton said. "I'm supposed to be here, in a program like this, with attention to detail and the level of accountability. I think it's the way football should be and I can't tell you how good it feels to finally have it

hmmm. Interesting .

Much to the dismay of our division rival fans, namely the Pats the above quote is one of the many reasons Saban gets the love he'e getting after only one season in th NFL. Fundamentals is where it starts and stops, if you aren't preaching fundamentals, you aren't winning.

I love having Saban, with him we have in just his second season seriously upgraded two of the most important elements for winning in the NFL, a suffocating D and a dominant QB.

Lol at the knock on the Cards by Shelton.

I love the Shelton addition. I think he has what it takes to be a solid LT in this league. Maybe not an All Pro . . . but a solid, dependable guy. And with Daunte back there, thats all u can ask for.

I have big hopes for this guy, think all he needs is a few more months learning under Houck. He has been a bit rough in preseason, but that's pretty much to be expe3cted, new team, new offense, new coaches, give him some time - he certainly has the size and stregth.

How has this guy looked in preseason so far? I havent paid much attention to him...

Wannstedt and his blind supporters never got the "Dominant QB" thing.
