Sports Illustrated: Dolphins show off no-huddle offense

The Miami Dolphins have decided faster is better on offense.
The Dolphins unveiled their new fast-paced offense in the preseason opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Friday night, going without a huddle for almost half the snaps.
Miami produced only seven points in a 20-7 loss, but did succeed in establishing a faster tempo.
"I think it's awesome,'' quarterback Matt Moore said after the game. "I think the offensive line did a great job, receivers were lined up and you can tell looking across the ball at the defense, they were a little worn out.''
Miami gained 354 yards against Tampa Bay, beating their 2011 regular season average of 317.4. First-year coach Joe Philbin said the Dolphins executed the no-huddle "relatively well,'' but added the play clock too often was lower than he would have liked when the ball was snapped.
Wide receiver Legedu Naanee said the no-huddle often accomplished one of its goals, keeping the defense off balance and unable to properly line up.
"The DBs were looking to the sideline,'' he said. "It was good. We've just got to continue to get better and capitalize on it.''

Im truly excited for this offense, can't wait to see it working to full effect.

This offense is great between the 20s. We still need to be able to run the ball abit in the red zone. Hoping to see that as the preseason continues.

Despite many concerns from the game, this is truly one of the few positives. The total yardage stat did jump out at me. Most of those yards were when Tannehill was playing QB but all 3 guys did pretty good.. Once we can get all the mistakes reduced, we should be at the top of the NFL in all the offensive categories.

You simply have to convert while in this offense because if you can't you are really leaving the defense hanging. But it does give the offense a distinct advantage, but you need to score touchdowns when you get in the redzone, plain and simple.

What scares me about this offense (which i do like) is the super fast 3 and outs. We r going to go 3 and out faster then anyone in the league and that D is going to be tired. Just hope they can handle it cuz they r the strength of the team.

0 points in the first half I don't know if I would describe it as "showing off".

Showing, for sure, but showing off? No.

Has anyone mention how this "faster pace offense" should help prepare our defense against teams like say NE? Not only from a conditioning stand-point, But also from an adjustment and proper alignment perspective.

I love the fast pace on the practice field. There's almost no down side to it. I'm not sure they should make indiscriminate use of it on the game field. There are several well-documented down sides to using it on the game field indiscriminately, unless you happen to be a very good offense.

I'm not really worried about points in the first two pre-season games. If it were zero points in the first three quarters of the last game I'd be concerned but to me the first two games are about getting certain players the reps they need to evaluate talent levels. The third game sets the starting roster and the fourth game is a polish up for the season.

There is a lot work and practice time between now and that polish up game, let's see what they can do.

I think this is the part we are all worried about. However, I'm not sure what you can do to avoid the potential "down-side" of that type of offense? It seems to me that you have to practice it in a real games situation just like you practice it on the practice field. You hope with the repetition it translates to consistency in both settings.

I don't see anything wrong with practicing at that pace and then slowing it down during the games. If anything it will give the players the feeling that practice is harder than games and that it's easier during games to do what they want to do.

If that was/is it's designed purpose then sure..slow it down during a game. However, If its purpose is truly what we've been hearing then you have to play at that speed during a game to maximize its effectiveness. I personally think it should be used strategically! For example: When you have a team on the ropes reeling

I don't think the Dolphins should focus on having a high speed offense until they're sure they have an effective offense. They don't have the horses right now.

They did move the ball pretty well, Matt Moore was kind of the victim of a little bad luck. Chad Johnson drops an easy first down heading inside the 20 and then a tipped ball gets picked on another drive they were moving well on. For what its worth...

i hardly see it as a victim of poor luck...good play by the dt getting in the air and throwing lane and a poor play by our guard blocking him...
