The Miami Dolphins continue tinkering with the training camp roster, signing former Florida International cornerback Anthony Gaitor on Wednesday according to a league source.
Gaitor, a former Miami Northwestern standout, spent the past three seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he primarily served as a nickel cornerback.
Nickel happens to be one of the Dolphins' weak spots considering Jimmy Wilson, the backup free safety, is the only experienced non-starter who can man the spot. Cortland Finnegan has experience playing the nickel spot, but he's presently slotted as the starting cornerback opposite Brent Grimes.
During Tuesday's OTA session, which was open to the media, Wilson was the only player manning the nickel spot.
Gaitor, a seventh-round pick in the 2011 draft, tallied 197 total tackles, including 19 for loss, four sacks, 11 interceptions (three which he returned for touchdowns), and broke up 35 passes during his career at FIU.
He played in 12 games with the Buccaneers in 2011 and 2012, starting two games in 2012. But Gaitor missed all of last season with a knee injury.
