Dolphins sign Jordan Kovacs to replace Thomas / TE Jake Stoneburner added to PS

With Michael Thomas out with a significant chest injury, the Dolphins are expected to add Jordan Kovacs to the roster off Eagles PS.

Will be nice to see what Kovacs has picked up over the last few weeks. He will help fill the void on ST's for sure.

The #Dolphins also signed former #Packers TE Jake Stoneburner to their practice squad with one of their two exemptions

The team has placed safety Michael Thomas on the Reserve/Injured list.

while it sucks to see mike thomas suffer that injury, it does open the door for walt aikens...i liked how he looked in preseason and the little time in reg season...look at what injuries did for allowing JELANI JENKINS to become a starter for years to come!this could be a blessing in disguise...hope mike thomas recovers quickly

Kovacs can do okay for Miami. Aikens is next guy up.

Sweet looking lockers! I'm guessing Stoneburner is next to Sims there as I'd bet that's Sims' boot.

Any info on this kid?

TE Evan Wilson was released from the p-squad to make room for Stoneburner. Jake Stoneburner played collegiately at Ohio State. Was signed as an UDFA with Green Bay in 2013. He ran a 4.56 in the 40 at 6'4" 252 pounds at his on campus workout in 2013. Apparently needs to improve his blocking but has decent hands and some run after catch ability according to scouting reports.

Went to Ohio State, thing is, while he was there TEs were basically extra tackles. His final 2 years though he showed a lot of athleticism and potential. A lot of people here wanted us to take a flyer on him in the draft.

I remember evaluating this guy...that timed speed definitely didn't match his play speed. Looking at his games I would have sworn he was a 4.8+ guy. He is a solid blocker, really good in that area, but he's not smooth in his route running. His change of direction is meh. If you're expecting a Jimmy Graham type receiving TE (since they had the same timed speed in the 40) it's not going to happen.

Surprising he's not on the Green Bay 53 given the lack of TE depth on Green Bay's roster. They basically have Quarless and nothing else and Quarless isn't very good.

Edit: Just watched his combine...he didn't run 4.56, he ran 4.65 (1.60 10-yard split), 9'8" broad jump, 34.5" vertical.

Meyer switched him to receiver for either his junior or senior year. Seemed a strange call as he was clearly suited to TE and was a decent blocker. I was a fan of his as a late rounder and look forward to see what we can do with his pretty decent natural talent.

Definitely deserves a good shot at the pros with what he achieved collegiately. He's in the Arthur Lynch mould, solid receiver and good blocker with soft hands and a nose for the endzone. Route running and top speed would be middle of the pack.
