Julius Thomas will be visiting with Dolphins officials and taking a physical on Tuesday and Wednesday, the final step in completing a trade that would send Miami’s seventh-round pick in April’s draft to the Jaguars for the veteran tight end.

But even as they move to acquire Thomas, the Dolphins still would like to re-sign tight end Dion Sims, according to someone with direct knowledge.

The question now is how receptive Sims will be. Sims told me last month that he’s proven that he’s a starting tight end and that would be an important factor in his free-agent decision.

So it is a valid concern that Sims may want to walk ..

Good they need to re-sign him and then we are set at TE at least for this season, and potentially beyond if JT plays well. Can't go into the season with no blocking TE's.

I'd like him back as well. Money will talk in this situation as it would've even if Thomas wasn't traded to Miami. If Sims prices himself out of Miami's plans so be it.

Given today's NFL, how many teams will see Sims as a starting TE? Yes, he improved in '16 and I want him back, but he's not the seam threat many teams want in the #1 TE. Not saying he'll have NO suitors, but I don't see a BIG demand.

Look I agree with you- this might just come down to emotion-he was told they wanted him back as the number 1 TE supposedly (which agree that he really is not). The team then executes this trade, not sure how Sims feels about it is all.

Please, PLEASE let him leave.

When Bill Belichick looked around and decided he needed another TEas insurance against another Gronk injury, or even just to further inflict pain and humiliation on opposing teams, he went out and bought himself a Martellus Bennett. A giant of a man with hands as soft as fleece and sticky as Lester Hayes on gamedays.

He DID NOT bring in an undersized, under-performing whelp.

With Dion Sims instead of Martellus Bennett, Belichick does NOT win another Super Bowl. Maybe he doesn't even get to one.

Id like him back. As a 2nd tight end he'd be perfect. Can block and can still catch the ball so we dont show our hand everytime he steps on the field.

Pretty sure Bennett isn't the sole reason they got to the super bowl but okay.

Sims isn't some god awful player. He's solid.

And a good blocker, something Thomas sure as hell isnt going to be

I don't think Gase is gonna have alot of sympathy for selfish players. Not that Sims is selfish, but some sort of sentiment that he should be the #1 guy isnt gonna fly well.

Sims is a good player and has a place on the team. He is excellent as a blocking TE, and no doubt he is the #1 blocking TE we have. If he feels our passing game should be funneled through him, well, he is playing for the wrong team.

I hope he stays though.

And I agree. Just wondering, through electrons, how many teams will see him as a #1.

Thomas was not acquired to replace Sims. It was to complement him. Sims will still get the vast majority of snaps. Someone please explain that to him so he will be more receptive to a decent contract. He's not exactly the kind of player you get in a bidding war over, but you still have to adequately replace him. Need him to stay.

If Sims goes I think they still might get a TE in the draft.

 That's hilarious.

The #1 tight end talk was nice pat on the back from Gase but let's be real here, Sims isn't a #1 tight end on any team.
