Ja’Wuan James is doing a better job with his hands (and feet). AL DIAZ adiaz@miamiherald.com

Ja’Wuan James, who played so poorly against the Browns that Adam Gase yanked him for all of overtime, is again at the top of his game.
Why? He’s finally gotten comfortable with the way the new Dolphins’ coaching staff wants him to play.
James was used to setting up with a certain technique; it’s what he did in college and his first two years as a pro.
But when Chris Foerster took over as offensive line coach earlier this year, he brought a new approach.
Just like it took Ryan Tannehill some time to learn Gase’s offense, it took James a third of the season to feel comfortable in Foerster’s system.
“It shouldn't be that big of a difference, but I needed to get more consistency,” said James, the Dolphins’ first-round pick in 2014. “And do it better everyday.”
James continued: “It's still a work in progress right now. Just coming off this bye, we had practice [Tuesday]. I was doing good things at practice and I also saw myself revert back a little bit. I've got to stay on top of it and stay in the rhythm.”
Which suggests that James could still get better as the year goes on.

It'd be fantastic if his best days were ahead of him. A relatively young core oline of Tunsil, Pouncey and James could be a strength for the next 6-7 years...

Pouncey won't last that long. Too many health issues.

We need to draft our replacement center in 2018. Too many holes to file in the 2017 draft starting with DE and linebacker. We might be OK with the secondary if Jones returns to health and returns from a contract standpoint.

I hope he is right, because the 'good' he has flashed this season is better than the 'best' he showed in previous seasons. Perhaps this system is one that best utilizes his physical gifts like length. If he can become consistently good, he could finally live up to his draft position and be a reliable RT for us. Thus far he's been a bit of fool's gold in his career, where people consistently over-estimate his play because of the horrible OL at other positions. But THIS season, he has actually had flashes of dominant play. Particularly lately when we've been mixing in more power concepts and emphasizing power and nastiness.

Offensive Linemen love to run the football. It allows them to attack rather than defend. It allows them to deliver the blows rather than absorb them. It appeals to their very nature, and it requires less thinking and a lot less reacting. They can just go out there and play more instinctively and less technically. Sure, it still requires good technique, but he gets to be the aggressor, and the defender has to react to him. These last two games--with a dominant Mike Pouncey at the pivot--have brought out the best in all of our OL, and that's no coincidence. Bushrod is a new man. Tunsil looks like an All-Pro. Albert continues to be a very good OL and consummate professional. But it may just be Ju'Wuan James that looks the most improved. He is actually dominating his end, making smart decisions and opening up holes. It's one thing to wall-off for a 2-foot wide hole that makes your RB run the ladder between ankles and push through butts as well as tackles; but it's quite another to wall-off 5-foot wide holes where your RB can jump-cut in the hole, and make that filling LB miss, minimizing contact.

We will pass more vs. the Jets ... but I think Gase recognizes that these OL feed off running the football, so we will definitely see a balanced attack this week.

Grats to James for adjusting. Let's hope it continues, because it seems to suit him.

If James can play up to his draft status this OL can be real real good. The fins have weapons all around the offense so just imagine if Gase can now finally use them with a competent line. That's reason for hope right there

The worst is behind him because unless he suddenly becomes Dallas Thomas or Billy Turner he can't bl9ck any worse than the Cleveland game

If all he to be concerned about his HIS responsibilities, then he will be fine. Tossing the trash a few weeks back was addition by subtraction.

I'm not buying this.

From what I've seen this year, his problems didnt stem from poor technique but total and complete lack of EFFORT.

Makes sense.

Chris Foerster is known for his hands technique.

Lol. Seriously though, ive seen plays where he doesnt even try to engage. It looked like he was TRYING to let Tanny get hit.

:brewskis:

I'd point to a missed assignment in those cases where he was either late or lost in his pick up. Even early on I thought James was playing well, but is also learning new line calls and technique.
