Dolphins | Team begins search for Saban's replacement
Wed, 3 Jan 2007 10:26:43 -0800
Alex Marvez, of the Sun-Sentinel, reports the Miami Dolphins have begun to compile a list of candidates to replace head coach Nick Saban, who left Wednesday, Jan. 3, to become the head coach at the University of Alabama. Candidates could include assistant coach Dom Capers and offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey, Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, Houston Texans assistant coach Mike Sherman, San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, Indianapolis Colts assistant coach Jim Caldwell, Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Norm Chow and Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt.

Out of the list the most intriguing are Rivera who will interview with the Falcons and Chow, and I really hope we get Chow....

Not a fan of Mooch's West Coast offense or his QBs,Steve Young and Garcia. If Mooch comes he keeps Joey and I want him out and I wouldn't mind Culpepper out as well and we drafting a QB with the 9... What a long offseason...

Whisenhunt, Chow, Cameron or Rivera would be fine. NO Capers or Mularky for gods sake.

Ken Whisenhunt FTW. Ken, with a good free agency period, can have an immediate impact like Sean Payton; he would also fix this offensive line and likely recruit some of his own from the Steelers [Max Starks maybe?] to fit his smash mouth mentality, and aggresive offense. Ronnie Brown will benefit from him a lot IMO.

I don't want Mooch, as a matter of fact, my best freind (lions fan) called me this morning and rubbed the Saban dilema by saying "why don't you go after Mooch...hahahaha"

Mooch would be a huge mistake.

By the way, I disagree Mooch would not keep Harrington. He and Millen bumped heads in the Lions because Mooch wanted Garcia to start and Millen wanted Harrington to start. And to top it all off, Harrington struggled in the Lions system, part of which was Mooch's system. Why would we keep harrington if the whole purpose was a change of system for him. Harrington himself indicated that the West COast offense was very complicated for him, as he would have to contantly check down on WR's, whereas in our system he knew where he had to go with the ball.

Rivera is the man. My biggest concern is the Falcons or Cardinals jumping on him before us. I'm also concerned that the buzz will be that the Dolphins job is the worst of the three. Blank has the money and some good talent in Atlanta, and there is also a lot of talent out there in the desert.

Believe it or not this team has been very attractive to FA's and coaches.

The guy from Indianapolis intrigues me. Caldwell. He must know that entire complex offense.

But I would like to eat (or blow) Chow.

Cam Cameron. Offensive coach who could have Ronnie Brown perform the same duties that LT does the chargers. (I wouldn't be expecting the same results, cause im not a dreamer, but i'd love to see us use ronnie brown in our offense the exact same way LT is used in san Diego) Also, he calls a simple passing game, which is what we need for Culpepper and/or the rookie we hopfully draft. Cam Cameron would turn our offense into something its desperately needed to become for years.

Seriously....How long, without jumping the gun,do we wait before our next coach is put into place? Team evaluation and preparation for the draft is too important,to lollygag around, while the other teams start scarfing up the coaching talent.

Those are all very good candidates. I'd be happy with either Chow, Rivera, Cameron.

Believe it or not this team has been very attractive to FA's and coaches.

We know these things about Miami:

* They have the worst stadium situation of the 3. While Wayne is renovating the place, it can't compare to the Georgia Dome until the renovations are pretty much done. It will never compare to that wonder they built out in the desert.

* They have a fan support issue, but that's the same in all three locales. Atlanta fans are notoriously fickle, and there is barely even a Cardinals fanbase. The Miami situation is better in that there is a strong national fanbase, but the locals don't treat the team as well as they should. I say that not to blast the locals here but to blast the locals who aren't here. If you devote your time to this board, you're clearly a good fan.

* The Dolphins roster is a bit of a mess. Saban changed the philosophy on defense and tore a bunch of stuff apart that is only half put back together. The offense has been a problem for over a decade -- we last had a top 5 ranking in yards or points in 1994. The Falcons have gobs of talent, and the Cards have a lot of good young offense.

* Wayne is the best owner of the three. Blank is close, but Bidwell is one of the worst in the league. Wayne and Blank are probably about equal in willingness to pony up cash. Wayne is better than Blank when it comes to patience -- if he signs a guy to a 5 year deal again, the chances are very strong that he won't be fired before the deal is up.

The issue here is that all three jobs are pretty good. There isn't a Browns or Lions job that is clearly inferior to Miami.

Well we'll have to wait until some of those teams are out of the post season.
