THE SERIES
SERIES RECORD: Miami leads 18-16 (including playoffs)
AT MIAMI: Dolphins lead 11-8
AT HOUSTON: Teams tied 6-6
AT TENNESSEE: Titans lead 2-1
LAST MEETING: 2012 at Miami; Titans 37, Dolphins 3
HISTORY LESSON: The Dolphins’ one victory at Tennessee came in a memorable Sunday night battle to open the 2001 season. The Dolphins left what was then called Adelphia Coliseum with a 31-23 victory thanks to a strong performance by the defense and by running back Lamar Smith. Smith scored two touchdowns, including a 65-yard catch-and-run that gave Miami a 24-7 lead in the third quarter. The defense had two sacks and three interceptions, including one that linebacker Zach Thomas returned for a touchdown that gave the Dolphins a 31-14 lead in the fourth quarter. Thomas punctuated his big play by doing a flip as he reached the end zone.
SERIES TREND: The Titans have won two of the past three meetings, but the Dolphins took eight of the previous 11. This will mark only the teams’ second meeting in Tennessee since 2003. In the previous one, the Titans pulled out a 27-24 overtime victory in 2009.
Point Spread Odds: Titans -1 ½
Over Under Total: 43 1/2 points.

Miami: Interim head coach Dan Campbell makes his debut for the Dolphins and promises the team will be more aggressive. But Campbell inherits an offense scoring just 14.5 points per game and a defense last against the run at 160.5 rushing yards per game. Those issues show up again on the road. Titans 17, Dolphins 16. -- James Walker
Tennessee: The Dolphins are giving up a league-worst 160.5 rushing yards a game and have only one sack. The Titans get back on track by running the ball better and with Marcus Mariota not under such frequent pressure. Titans 24, Dolphins 17. -- Paul Kuharsky

There is no reason that the Titans should not beat the Dolphins... unless Ken Whisenhunt truly isn't fit for a head coaching position. This game will tell a lot. I still believe that Whisenhunt can be a respectable head coach in the NFL.
Prediction: Miami – 20, Tennessee - 31

It’s easy to look at this game and predict an easy win for the Titans against a Dolphins squad that’s bordering on dumpster fire status. However, New Orleans reminded us Thursday night that any team can win in the NFL. Miami can’t stop anybody on defense, while the Titans defense has had some quality showings this season. Still, I feel like Miami will play hard for Dan Campbell, and make this game harder on Tennessee than is expected.
Prediction: Miami - 24, Tennessee – 28

The Tennessee Titans face a must-win on Sunday versus the Miami Dolphins. Marcus Mariota and company will look to regroup from two demoralizing losses at home in the last three weeks. If the Titans drop three in a row at home, consider a winning season out of reach. Miami has a new head coach who's instituting a new culture, but the Dolphins putrid run defense gives the Titans a chance to run the football and take some pressure off Mariota. The Titans defense has played well aside from the crucial third-down mistakes, and will put pressure on QB Ryan Tannehill. The Titans find a way to close out the opponent and salvage the home stand.
Prediction: Miami - 17, Tennessee - 21

After the Titans’ near win last Sunday, I am growing more and more cautious picking them to beat any team. I picked the Titans to win this game in an October schedule preview, and since I'm a man, I'm going to be manly and stick to what I predicted. Plus it's a "safe" pick on paper. But, the recent coaching change in Miami has me concerned. Teams are emotional and a new coach can spark newfound enthusiasm from players and fans. I still believe the Titans are a better team and see them prevailing in the end. Perrish Cox is ruled as questionable. If he can play alongside Jason McCourty, this should be a certain win, though nothing is certain in the NFL.
Prediction: Miami – 13, Tennessee - 30
Coming off a bye, rested and motivated, Miami wins in Nashville. You heard me right: Dolphins win, Dolphins win. Let us not forget the talent on this ball club. While much of the nosiest trouble has enveloped former coach Joe Philbin and current quarterback Ryan Tannehill, we should note that the new-look defense has sported a mostly bad look through the first quarter of the season. That will change under interim coach Dan Campbell, the kind of personality the team needs. How will the Titans bounce back from last week's tough loss? Much depends on a heretofore absentee running game showing up. Tennessee has averaged just 92.5 yards per game and 3.4 yards per pop over its last two games. And that's with Marcus Mariota's five carries for 47 yards last week.

Like Miami, Tennessee needs to find a rushing attack this week. They have shown flashes at times this season, which is both encouraging and surprising given the lack of talent in their backfield. But there is plenty of need for improvement. Sunday's matchup against a Miami defense that is allowing 160 rushing yards per game, by far the most in the NFL, should provide ample running room. Tennessee’s offensive line must take Ndamukong Suh out of the game and provide Mariota with the time he needs to shine. Defensively, Tennessee must apply pressure on Ryan Tannehill, while containing Jarvis Landry and Jordan Cameron in the passing game. Miami has struggled across the board on offense in its last two contests, so it is a manageable situation, especially if the Dolphins continue to ignore their run game.

Comment: I'm going to keep picking them until I get one right. It's not too much to expect a boost of energy from the coaching change. Plus, the Titans at 1-3 are a good opponent to change your season.

Prediction: Titans 24, Dolphins 17
Comment: The Titans, who have one of the NFL’s top five defenses, will stack the box, daring Ryan Tannehill to throw aggressive passes. Tennessee will follow the same blueprint as the Bills and the Jets had in shutting down the Dolphins. This team is going nowhere until Tannehill’s 6.32 yards per attempt average gets closer to the league average (7.3). If interim coach Dan Campbell wants his team to become aggressive, the quarterback needs to be the beacon of change.

Comment: Admittedly, I’ve lost the feel for this team. Last week, I said I didn’t think they were bad enough to fall to 1-3. I’ll keep using that logic until they win, as they have the talent.

Comment: Two key questions: If the Dolphins win, do they carry Dan Campbell off the field? And if so, are they strong enough to lift him? Kidding aside, the Dolphins should play with a little more edge this Sunday -- and the bye week will have them fresh enough to take advantage of it.

Prediction: Titans 20, Dolphins 16
Comment: How realistic is it to expect things to turn around quickly under interim coach Dan Campbell? In the last two games, Ryan Tannehill has a a woeful 56.5 passer rating and has thrown five interceptions. To make matters worse, the Dolphins have yet to recover an opposing fumble, and are tied for second worst in the NFL with three takeaways. As for the Titans, they have the league's stingiest passing defense, allowing just 166.5 yards per game.

Prediction: Dolphins 22, Titans 17
Comment: The Dolphins, along with a new level of intensity naturally born from a coaching change, should be strengthened by the returns of Branden Albert and Brent Grimes, along with a more healthy Cameron Wake. The pass rush must show up against a Titans team that is playing its third home game in a row, with the first two being losses as rookie Marcus Mariota's passer rating has declined each week. Lamar Miller needs at least 18 touches.

Prediction: Dolphins 20, Titans 17
Comment: While Marcus Mariota has been decent in his rookie season, Tennessee has seen moderate success this year mostly because of an improved defense (they lead the league in pass defense). This is finally the game the Dolphins dedicate themselves to the run -- and they get a win because of it.
