The Miami Dolphins have been connected to virtually every college quarterback from Tua Tagovailoa to Jordan Love this draft season, but it’s not only the high-profile guys on which the Dolphins front office is keeping tabs.

According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the Dolphins will be meeting with former FIU Panthers quarterback James Morgan before this year’s draft.

Morgan, 6’4”, 229 lbs, joined the Panthers in 2018 after three seasons with Bowling Green State. 2018 was the best year of his college career by a wide margin, as the Green Bay Native completed 65.3 percent of his passes for 2727 yards, 26 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions. That year, he led the Panthers to a 9-4 record. His numbers took a dip last season as the Panthers failed to capitalize the momentum they gained from the previous year, and the team slogged to a 6-7 record. Morgan managed just a 58.0 percent completion rate, 2585 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, and five interceptions.

As pointed out by NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein, Morgan’s arm gives off a resemblance of the power and “zip” of Green Bay greats like Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre, but his accuracy is nowhere near where it needs to be, and his mechanics are all over the place. Morgan seems to rely on his strength far too often and doesn’t have the touch to drop the ball where only his receiver can get it. That said, FIU’s receiving corps certainly hasn’t been elite, so it’s not like Morgan had the ample help that Tagovailoa or Joe Burrowhad benefited from during their collegiate careers.

In all likelihood, Miami’s meeting with Morgan has more to do with giving a local prospect a shot at some exposure and the team’s desire to turn over every stone as it searches for its answer under center than a belief that Morgan will actually be that answer. Morgan’s ceiling, at least going into the draft and next season, is likely that of an undrafted free agent turned practice squad player.

Do NOT underestimate this guy. Lots of positive pub about him.
Even if we took a QB at 5, I would take this guy later as well. Then trade Rosen, go into the season with Fitz, Pick at 5, Morgan. Insurance policy, developmental guy, protection against injury.

Low release point but good size, good arm, I like what I saw initially

Hopefully they're not seriously considering coming away from this draft without one of Burrow, Tua, Herbert, Love. Would be beyond devastating.

If we need to keep 4 QB on the roster, keep 4. Rosen probably isn't going anywhere because of the low cap hit.

Practice squad guy bc of Rosen and Fitz, unless Rosen is moved - he's the kind of QB you want as a backup on your roster. Highly thought of by guys he's played for and with.

I think Grier is meeting with as many players as the team is allowed to prior to the draft and Morgan is just one of those players. With them expected to take a QB in the first round and with Fitzpatrick, Rosen and Rudock already on the roster, I don’t see them using another draft pick on a QB. The only way he ends up with the Dolphins is if he is not drafted and the Dolphins sign him as a free agent. Even if that happens I don’t see him making the roster.

There's nothing wrong with giving a QB prospect a look-see. I don't assume we will take two QB's, but with 14 picks, plus maybe some trade downs, we could end up with 15 or 16 picks. If we do go Tua, with his injury history, I would NOT squawk about us taking a 2nd QB in the 5th-7th range, especially if we could then flip Rosen for a pick next year. Morgan would essentially replace Rosen, and would be even cheaper, and if you look at Morgan, he is A)better leader; B)better size; C)good arm; D)admired by teammates.
If you are looking for a back up, you could do worse than snagging this guy late.
I am not banging the drum for him to be our future starter or anything, but this is a guy I wouldn't mind bringing into the fold. If we're lucky- he looks good in preseason and backing up a game or two and in two or three years we flip him for a nice pick or player. Worst case- we lose out on a Day 3 pick but it's a crap shoot by that point any way. And the value of a QB if he can play it all is high.
Plus, people have complained about how few QB's we've drafted over the years, why would anyone complain about snagging a second one?
Why people have to mock this guy baffles me. They must know NOTHING about him.

I like Morgan! I see him as the perfect developmental QB. Great potential to become a good #2 QB in the league.
