Good and well reasoned article on the saints vs the run..

"You go back and look at what have people have done in the first quarter when it was tied," Henning said. "[What happened] when it was 7-7 or 0-0? Did they run the ball decently? You have to look at those stats and see if they stopped the run under those conditions?"

But here is the reeealllly interesting thing that jumped out at me. The Saints have faced a Wildcat type of run play six times this year. They have yielded 49 yards on those plays. That's an 8.2-yard per play average yield against Wildcat plays

That was the game which saw Kolb's first start for the eagles.

The Eagles just started the wildcat business, so they are not nearly as refined and experienced with the wildcat as the Dolphins are.

What happened was the saints got a lead and the eagles went away from the wildcat trying to win it through the air with Kolb.

But I will say that the Saints played with only 7 in the box against the Eagles wildcat. I don't think Greg Williams will have that game plan against Miami's wildcat on Sunday. He isn't stupid.

This is the key point. The Saints have not faced a team that dogmatically sticks to the run. We are the first. Let's see how they do against. Let's see if Brees stays hot after sitting on the bench for 10 minutes.

Vick didn't play against Saints

Because the Dog-Killer was suspended still during the game.

Yes, the Eagles did run the Wildcat 6-8 times against our defense, and each time the Saints played 6-7 players at or near the line of scrimmage. Infact, the Eagles caught the Saints off-guard with the formation.

Greg Williams is a bright defensive coach and very innovative in his game planning. I suspect he will have the defense ready for the Wildcat on most plays. I also suspect the Dolphins will gash the Saints defense several times during the game running this formation.

The Saints are in the Top 5 rushing the football, so don't think it's only about Brees throwing the ball. The Saints average over 150 yards rushing per game. And they hold the time of possession advantage over opponents as do the Dolphins.

All of this makes this weeks game very intriguing.

So which is it, are they going to stop it most plays:chuckle:, or get gashed when we run it?

I think the 2nd one is more accurate.

Just can't get behind too much early. That's the key. I don't care how good we are at the run...we won't be running the ball and spending 10 minutes per drive if we're down 21-0.

Our offense should be ok, I think our D line is the problem in the pass game. They need to step up and play they're best game yet. Get pressure on brees all day.

I am confident that we can run against anybody, and thats a great thing, because its the only thing that will keep this game close. If we can keep it close, I believe Henne gives us a chance to win it. I am by no means comparing Henne to Brees, but if we keep him off the field, we can trade drive for drive, and Henne can launch the ball well enough to win on the final drive with a few minutes left.

I hope this game goes the way I have it mentaly scripted, because it could be like the Arizona game last year.

A couple of things.

1. I've heard the "bright defensive coach" line before when it comes to being "sure" that a person can "figure out" the Wildcat. I don't know when people are going to learn. There's nothing to "figure out". You either defend it, or you don't. You either have the horses, or you don't. The Dolphins either execute, or they don't.

2. Something that struck me about the Saints defense is the fact that they've faced Matthew Stafford, Kevin Kolb, Mark Sanchez and Trent Edwards in 4 of their 5 games. That's not a great group. It's not hard to get takeaways against that group. It's not hard to sack that group.

3. They faced Eli Manning last week, true enough...but look what the Saints offense did to the Giants in that game. It isn't that the Giants weren't moving the ball. I'm pretty sure the Saints didn't want them to score 27 points. When the scoreboard is putting that much pressure on an offense that wants to be balanced, it's really hard to have an effective day on offense.

4. That said, if they do that to us, we'll have the same results. I don't see good things happening for our offense if they're feeling tons of pressure on the scoreboard. It'll be Arizona all over again.

I think Henne is better than Stafford, Kolb, Sanchez and Edwards. I think he will play better against them and I don't feel like I'm biased when I say that. Henne has outperformed all of those guys this year. Is Manning better? Sure. But that probably would have been a different game if the Saints offense hadn't been abusing the Giants defense so thoroughly.

The sombrero is on the defense. That's the way it is. You're facing a great offense. In my experience watching Drew Brees, he is either going to be on fire or he is going to be off. You have to hope you can throw him off. If he's off against us the way he was against Buffalo and the Jets, Miami can win. In fact, Miami should win under those circumstances. Our offense versus their defense is not a question mark for me. I think (and thought before the year began) that their D was being set up to victimize offenses for trying to score with the Saints offense. If the Saints offense is failing to score, then they'd better hope they're playing QBs as poor as Trent Edwards and Mark Sanchez. Chad Henne is not among those. If the Saints offense is having difficulty in this game, Miami will win.

Great points, CK. I think we'll know on the first possession of the game which Drew Brees has shown up.

smart post. I think GW lives for these kind of defensive games, and unlike the giants he will change his game plan minute by minute, should be fun to see if he can come up with something.

My guess is hes going to try and penetrate the play before it develops. Have 2-3 guys try to hit the gaps, or push the line to the sweep side to stop it.

Agree with most of this, but if you check the stats Brees is never off, he performs well even in games we lose, betting that guys are going to pressure Brees is a 1% chance, his rating is over 120 when pressured or blitz'd .
Brees loves loves this game, and always trys hard, but hes a geek in a good way.

I have only seen one game were he didnt perform well and it was
-10 degrees and 40 mph winds in Chicago, brees cant play in weather. Otherwise your dead on I think.

Absolutely agreed. I have been making these points to anyone within earshot for the past week.

Here's another thing: I really wish I knew the statistics on pass interference calls for the officiating crew this week. We play pretty physical in the secondary, and have been getting a lot of those calls against us this year (some of them deserved, but some egregiously not). This week that will be especially important, as Brees has so much faith in his receivers he'll throw it up to them now and then even if they're "covered", believing they'll come down with the ball. At least two of his touchdowns that I remember against the Giants came this way, one of them not just against good coverage, but against double coverage -- granted, the should-be unemployed C.C. Brown was one of the ones in "coverage" (it's actually three, if you count the Marques Colston one down the seam that got them to the 1 and led to the Bell touchdown).

Just saying. If some of those calls go our way this week, that would be nice.
