Dolphins | Williams' decision today?
Sat, 27 May 2006 07:15:46 -0700
Perry Lefko, of the Toronto Sun, reports Miami Dolphins RB Ricky Williams is expected to find out Saturday, May 27, if he will be joining the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL. While the Argos are not commenting, one source suggested the team will announce it has signed him or has decided he's no longer in its plans, but likely not a situation of allowing the saga to drag on indefinitely. With training camp almost a week old, the first preseason game this Friday, June 2, and the impact the whole Williams situation has had on the team, the Argos ownership and management apparently are ready to make a move one way or the other. Williams and his agent, Leigh Steinberg, have been in town for several days and already have met with the team's owners and president. Steinberg repeatedly has said that Dolphins coach Nick Saban is concerned that Williams could sustain an injury. It has been suggested the Dolphins are worried about how they would be perceived publicly if Williams hurt himself playing in the CFL after they had given their blessing.

I hope it falls through, Ricky is just too good a player to be in that league. Regardless of what some here will say, that's my opinion. Ricky doesn't need the abuse. I think if he committed himself he could gain weight and practice at the facility with the coaches and keep up with the playbook.

Ricky

Just read a report on www.tsn.ca that Leigh Steinberg expects Ricky to play in Toronto. The article goes into depth about how the league will allow Ricky back to Miami and the hold ups such as Memorial Day and Steinberg travelling overseas but says Ricky is staying in Toronto.

i live in canada and i would love to see ricky here. i know he would bust all rushing records and actually make me watch cfl. without ricky i can't watch the cfl. just not exciting like the nfl

it would be a treat for all canadians to realize what kind of talent level the nfl has

I am going to Edmonton to watch Ricky in October. The phins don't get out to Seattle very often so I will take what I can get.

They are dragging this out longer than the Joey Harrington backup QB deal, and the Lavar Arrington to Miami rumors. How hard can it to be have Ricky sign a ONE year deal with Toronto which is NOT renewable??

I'm all for Ricky playing in the CFL. Not only does it give him some cash to be able to meet his child expenses, but it will keep him in great shape and, perhaps most important, help keep him out of trouble. There is nothing worse for an X druggie than sitting around being bored.

In the past three seasons Ricky has played about one half of a season, I don't think the aduse of the CFL is going to be a problem. Practicing at the facility with the coaches is not going to keep him polished either. The live action in the CFL is going to be better for him, taking handoffs from coaches isn't going to help with his ability to see the holes and break tackles. In my opinion, playing in the CFL is going to help him more than hurt him!

The risks of an injury cannot be diminished.CFL fans have to admit that the playing fields in Canada are not up to the same standards as the NFL.

Ricky ran for nearly 800 yrds in a part time roll last year after taking a year off and losing weight. He doesn't need to play to be effective, he needs to stay healthy for the Fins. Playing for a AAA ball club won't help him, he's that good. Part of a RB's longevity is health, the less abuse to sustain the longer the career. The coaches can simulate to some extent the contact while limiting the hits, but still allowing Ricky to hone his skills. There is nothing to gain for a player like Ricky in a sub par league, however his chance of injury does not decrease it's just as high if not higher in Canada. In the end the negatives far outway the positives in this situation. If Ricky was an undrafted RFA and we had little invested in him then this situation would make sense, but he's not and we don't!!
