DENVER — Despite his success on the field, Brandon Marshall was a giant headache for the Denver Broncos.
He feuded openly with his coach and front office and ultimately forced a trade this spring that landed him in Miami as the Dolphins' new superstar.
While playing for Denver, he made the Pro Bowl twice in four seasons and established himself as one of the NFL's most prolific receivers. He also encountered police more than a dozen times in three states for incidents including domestic violence, false imprisonment and driving under the influence.
The most serious charges were reduced and he never served jail time.
But there was another crime that became a defining moment in his life. In that episode, he was not a suspect but a witness, although he admits that he bears some blame for the tragedy.
It began with a misunderstanding at a nightclub and ended with the shooting death of his friend and Broncos teammate, cornerback Darrent Williams.
More than 3-1/2 years have passed since a gang member antagonized by Marshall gunned down Williams. The shooter thought he was spraying bullets at the limousine in which Marshall was riding, but he got the wrong car.
Although Marshall was unhurt, he paid a price.
"At one point, he said he thinks about it every day," Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey said. "He does blame himself, and that's not right. There's plenty of altercations like this all the time, and people don't get shot."
