We're three weeks out from the first full day of training camp, and it's a little disturbing that Donald Thomas still isn't sure if he'll be ready or not.
That torn pectoral muscle he suffered in May was a definite setback, especially for a guy who missed out on a tremendous opportunity as a rookie Opening Day starter when he broke his foot in his second quarter of the 2008 regular season.

"This has become a game I really love," Thomas told the Hartford Courant. "You want to be true to what you love ... when it's taken away from you, and it's your job too. It's tough, but I'm looking ahead and right now I'm trying to maintain being in shape, staying with the program and keeping up on my plays, basically getting my mind right."

Boy would it be nice to have Duke Robinson sitting around right now.

Hopefully, he will make it back for the regular season, which after reading the original story I am confident will happen. Here is another link for the same interview from the Hartford Currant which paints a little different story. The original article posted is pretty schotty journalism by Mike Berardin from the Sun-Sentinal where he doesn't say anything about Thomas' goal of being ready by training camp or about the preparation he is doing to make it happen. It looks to me like he left out everything positive and only included the negative.

"I plan on being ready to go this year," Thomas said by phone from Miami this week.

Dolphins training camp opens Aug. 2. Thomas, 23, says he doesn't know if he'll be ready, but that's the goal. Thomas is under contract for $1.72 million for four years. He said the game against Indianapolis Sept 21, featuring the Colts' first-round pick and former UConn back Donald Brown, and the game against the Patriots Dec. 6, featuring Darius Butler, are prime-time home games for him.

He needs to get healthly soon..cause in that week 1 game the time he played Kris Jenkins wasnt moving he kept getting pushed back

Torn Pec is not easy to come back from. I don't think he will be ready. 2 months is just not enough time. I tore mine april 08 and it is JUST starting to feel strong again. I'm sure Thomas has much better treatment then I do but 2 months......Just won't happen.

I just hope he doesn't hurry and try to play when he's still not 100%. I'd rather have him healthy in say week 3 than him come back to soon and injur himself even further.

You know, when this injury story first happened, and I expressed my frustration at the ammount of attention paid to the interior line, I was blasted. At the time, it said he'd be ready by training camp. Now, it's "not sure" and, "hope" to be back by the time the season starts.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. When you have a guy that has more games on IR than games played in the NFL, you need to be a little pragmatic about your plan B.

It depends on the severity of the tear. If it is a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd degree (full or partial) tear. I also don't know your lifting/strenght background but 1+ years seems like a long time to come back from such an injury. If you needed surgery and had it (or didn't have it) I can definately see why you are having a longer recovery period. I am also betting that you have a different career than pro football where you can't donate your entire work day/week to preparing for the upcoming season. I also don't remember Thomas needing surgery to repair the torn pec. If this is the case the recovery time would be much shorter than if he needed surgery. I just don't think we can compare the two situations without knowing the full extent of both injuries, and unfortunately with or FO we may never know the full extent of Thomas' injury.

I partially tore my quad which is very painful by the way and much worse than a pectoral tear. My knee actually turned black and blue from the blood loss of the tear. I was borderline surgery. my doctor had me do stretches and I was back playing ball in about a month. This happend 3 years ago when i was 35. I work out about three time a week so I was in pretty good shape at the time of the injury. It all depends on the tear of the muscle and the healing speed of the individual. Hopefully Thomas heals as fast as he gets injured. lol

Please elaborate, because that is as premature an evaluation of a player as I've seen on this site.
really?

How about this; please provide a sample of evidence that shows how many players miss their entire rookie season, get hurt again with a different ailment the following minicamp/OTA, and turn it around to amount to a starter or above average player in the league.

I'd bet a good amount of money the answer is: an overwhelming majority fade away or become backups, as opposed to the opposite.

If Thomas isn't ready to go by week 1 and shows he is healthy and progressing, I think this guy will have missed his chance. Our front office will move on to plan B's future at the RG spot. And IMO, deservedly so.

While Im a huge fan of Thomas and cannot wait for his return. It makes you wonder if Miami picks up Brian Water via Free Agency if he is released by KC or if they trade for him if KC is willing to trade him.
