It's the offseason so I got bored and bought the NFL "GamepassHD". ($34.00 very worth it BTW). So lastnight I had nothing to do but stay up and watch 14 hrs of football.
After watching several of the games and noticing how often the RG and center were getting pushed around I went back and watched the first jets game. I won't go play by play like I have written out but will just highlight some of the certain plays that stood out.
9:04 1stQ: (pass play)Thomas 1 on 1 with #92 stood him straight up. Once he got his hands on him it was over, which was a reoccuring theme. Did not give an inch and gave Chad plenty of room to throw.
:55 1st Q: (pass play) 1 on 1 with Jenkins and once again absolutly stone walled him. Zero penetration
Last play of the 1st Q: (run play) Play was to the left but Thomas did a solid job of getting to the 2nd level. Once there he grabbed a LBer and flung him to the ground like a rag doll.
12:45 2Q (pass play) redzone play, one on one with Bowens I believe and once they engage it looks like the guys turns into a statue. He is paralized, which opens a throwing lane that Chad uses to throw the TD to TE.
:18 2Q (pass play) maybe the best play of the day for Thomas. Jenkins is lined up over Samson and at the snap slants to Thomas. Samson drops back and Thomas has Jenkins one on one. Jenkins uses a spin move to get by Donald and it's ugly. Donald uses his hands beautifully and catches Kris coming out of the spin. Donald is lower and with great leverage and balance again absolutely stone walls Jenkins to a stand still. Thomas doesn 't give an inch. This is the play where Long is called for tripping and the play is called back but what Thomas does to Jenkins on that play makes Kris angle away from him the rest of the day. After the game Jenkins made a comment about how strong Thomas was and I bet either that play or the one at the 10:25 of the 3rd is what he was talking about.
10:25 3rd Q (run play) Ricky runs between guard and tackle right. Jenkins reads the play from the snap and is in perfect position to make the play for no gain. He slides and Thomas grabs a hold of him and it is over. Thomas is able to stop his progress and turn him back away from the play to give Ricky enough time to get by. Ricky gets 5 yards.
:59 3rd Q, 9:08 4th, and 9:01 4th are all one on one pass plays with jenkins and all are wins by Thomas.
Now I am not saying Thomas is the next Larry Allen but he has tremendous potential. One thing he can't do is block well while moving. Late in the 4th down on the goalline was the only time in the game I saw them try and let him pull. It was not pretty and Ricky ended up having to run up into the line for no gain.
When Thomas is out running all it takes is a headfake to make him completely whiff. I also saw him having trouble working double teams. May have been how bad Samson was getting pushed back but it seemed Donald was always blocking them from behind or pushing them sideways.
Another small complaint was he didn't seem to work well with the others on pass blocking. They all took a step back while he was unwilling to give an inch. This allowed a gap that could be exploited by a delayed blitz.
But those are all little problems when compared by the others we had playing the position last year. If you let Thomas do what he does best, let him play with balance and leverage he could be one of our best OLman.
Another thing to point out is how a QB needs to step into a throw to get zip on the ball. Samson and the guards were getting pushed back so fast last year there wasn't room to step into throws. With Grove and a healhty Thomas this year that will change.
The other player that stood out last year was R. Hill. He was absolutely horrible. There were games I think we would have been better off playing 10 on 11. The KC game he twice blocked Porter from getting to the ball carrier. The first time was a 30 yard misdirection play where Porter had outside contain and Hill just came up and got in the way.
Hill was also the one I blame for the 4th and 13 TD in the jets game. He was playing center field and brett drops back 10 yards and when Starks almost sacked him Brett moves forward to make Randy miss. At this point Hill is where he is supposed to be but he sees Brett move forward and is afraid he is gonna run 23 yards for the 1st so he takes off towards the LOS. Brett throws it up and you know the rest. If he would have stayed at home it would have been an easy pick.
Hill made so many bad plays and took so many bad angles it is a miracle he kept his job. Wilson doesn't have to be great to be a huge improvement over what we had last year.
Speaking of Starks he was another player that really stood out when going back to look at the games. He really made a lot of big plays in big situations. I really didn't remember him making so many plays. I hope he gets his legal stuff taken care of.
After watching most of the season I would say that heading into the offseason our biggest needs: a new center, FS and depth at guard. Two out of three ain't bad and we still have time to find depth at guard.
