I cant remember what thread I saw it in but the poster said that Donnie Jones wouldnt make the team because most of his kicks had been going out of the endzone or touchbacks.. Well so far Jones has been much better than Turk IMO..

Jones 21 punts 45.2 avg 38.7 Net 3 TB and 7 inside the 20
Turk 13 punts 40.9 avg 30.2 Net 2 TB and 3 inside the 20

How good of a chance do you guys see Jones making the team as the starting punter and Turk getting cut?

I think the chances are good from a business standpoint

does this mean that from a talent standpoint youd rather have Turk?

I like this kid and the promise of a youngster always excites me.

I'd be a horrible head coach though.

Just a few days ago Saban commented that he had been inconsistent with his punts. However, he was fantastic last night. How much is Turk making in salary??

maybe he will improve over last year. He wasn't too impressive for the Hawks

You save $465k by keeping Jones. I say CYA Turk! He is a headcase. I'd much rather have the rook. I wouldn't be shocked - we already let a vet snapper go so if a young guy is close why not? Save the money - develop him and next year we are much better for it.

In regards to the LS situation, Saban said that Perry and Denney were about even in preseason and in such a case you always go with the younger guy.
Looking at the numbers above, it looks like Jones is strongly ahead in net avg, the most important number imo, so if Saban was serious in his comments regarding the long snappers, it should hold true here and Jones becomes our regular punter.

Doesn't Turk hold for Mare? That right there could be the reason he stays.
Remember what a great job Turk did in Washington holding for kicks...Snyder canned him after the playoffs, when he botched the snap on a game winning attempt.

I totally agree with your comment MrClean. I think that age will play a big factor in this decision, since we can have a punter that performs just as well, if not better than Turk and he's a lot younger.
