Attention Doom and Gloomers, hate (love) to break it to you, but if you look deeply at the numbers, the Patriots are hardly much better than us. Here's the thing, we have both played the Jets, and looking deeper into the numbers, they are eerily comparable.
Also, week 1 they played against the pathetic Chiefs who lost to the Raiders. I know many of you are tired of the empty optimism, so I dug up some numbers to shut you "we're gonna get hammered" sayers up (though I doubt anything short of laryngitis would accomplish such a feat):
Let's start with Run Defense:
The Phins are 12th in the league in Rush yards allowed per game, but more importantly, are only allowing 3.1 ypc.
The Pats are tied for 15th in the league in Rush yards allowed per game, allowing an average of 4.3 ypc (over an entire yard more)
For the passing game, since our non-Jets opponents were completely opposite in this regard, we will look to the performance specifically against the Jets:
The Pats allowed him 18 for 26 (69.3%) 181 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT, and Sacked him twice.
The Phins allowed 15 for 22 (68.2%) 194 yards, 2 TD and 1 FF, and sacked him three times.
Even further, the total yardage allowed by the Pats was 256, and for the Phins, 293.
Now, if you take away that pathetic lucky TD pass (yes it was only our fault I understand that) which went for 22 yards, not only do we win the game, but the defensive performance as a whole would be virtually identical to that of the Pats.
Being football fans we all know that while the final score is all that matters, it does not always tell the story of the performance. Point is, this notion that the Pats are lightyears better than us right now is unjust. Look, the Cards may have been historically bad, but their offense is for real. If they played the Pats tomorrow, I'd take the Cardinals.
Offensively, we fared better against the Jets. The Pats netted 260 yards, while the Phins tallied 277 yards.
So you see guys, don't hand this game to the Pats just yet. This game should be similar to the Jets game. Let's just hope that those game-defining plays swing our way for once. Besides, I think as the season wears on, we will realize that the Cardinals loss wasn't as bad as it seemed. I expect them to be in the playoffs (barring injury) and with the weapons they have, they can have that kinda game against many other teams in the league.
Hope I made some of your days fellow Phin fans...let's hope for a better showing this week.
