Down Lineman Technique

I am a long time football watcher, but not a player. With all Defensive Line banter this week, there has been a lot of talk about 1 technique.. 5 technique.....

I'm not sure what those terms means.

Can someone put a Cliff Notes version of this together for me.

A 5 tech is a lineman lined-up on the Tackle's out side shoulder. A 4 technique is lined-up head up on the Tackle. 3 technique is lined-up on the Guards out shoulder. 2 Technique is lined- up head up on the guard. 1 tech is lined-up on the centers outside shoulder. 0 tech is a head up nose tackle lined up directly over the center

Basically the 1-tech lines up in the A-gap....the 5-tech lines up on the outside shoulder of the tackle...

It's just different gap responsibilities.....for different schemes...

The gaps are all numbered. between the center and guard is 1, between the gaurd and tackle is 3, between the tackle and TE is 5, and between the TE and what is an imaginary player is 7. The NT lines up as the 0, straight up on the center. the DE, Langford and Odrick now, line up as the 5-technique on the outside shoulder of the tackle, but i believe he can be moved around. I hope that helps some.

5 tech is face up on the tackle...this is so the person who is manning it can two gap.. if in a 2 gap system... so they are responsbile for the 4 and 6 gap respectively.
