I figured it would be interesting to take a look back at where each of our new signings was selected in their respective drafts.

Here goes:

Jason Ferguson - 7th round pick (229th overall) in the 1997 draft
Josh McCown - 3rd round pick (81st overall) in the 2002 draft
*Calivin Pace - 1st round pick (18th overall) in the 2003 draft
Ernest Wilford - 4th round pick (120th overall) in the 2004 draft
Justin Smiley - 2nd round pick (46th overall) in the 2004 draft
Randy Startks - 3rd round pick (71st overall) in the 2004 draft
Reggie Torbor - 4th round pick (97th overall) in the 2004 draft
Sean Ryan - 5th round pick (144th overall) in the 2004 draft

* denotes a player that has not officially signed with the team

Clearly, it appears as if Parcells and Co. are going after players that they scouted in the 2003 and 2004 drafts but were unable to draft. I also like that most of four of these guys were first-day selections.

And as for Ferguson, he was a quality starter for Parcells, who played in all 16 games for six straight seasons prior to last year's injury-shortened season.

Sean Ryan was a Parcells draft pick.

Good point.

It just seems clear to me that most of these guys were on Parcells' radar since college. It also seems that most of these guys, though not marquee names, are fairly talented.

thanks for the info.

It seems like Parcells and co are trying to rebuild through the 03 and 04 drafts, not just the 08. I like this, it gives us a new nucleus of younger players that still have upside and can fit in the current system.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

It's almost as if Parcells and Co. are trying to build two layers of youth. One layer is composed of young but seasoned veterans that have already proven to be serviceable starters or looking to break into a starting lineup. The other layer will comprised of rookies from this year's draft.

It's as if he's trying to remedy the gaping hole in young talent that was created by the Wannstedt regime.

what an interesting observation.. replacing the guys we don't have with guys he wanted and couldn't always get. The only way to compete really, is to find a way to fill the void where our draft picks "should" be. I will think about this more, thanks 77, nice connection. :hi5:

I think that having that second layer of youth, as hugo stated, would help the transition to a Parcells type team much quicker. And by focusing on solid players or players with upside we aren't breaking the bank on one or two pro bowl history older players that may be in decline.

Or actually getting good players from the 2002-2004 drafts, since we didn't bother drafting any.

Thanks for the props 77.

I think that most of us would agree with your stance that getting a handful of young solid players is better than overspending on a couple of aging Pro Bowlers.

It's the more intelligent longterm strategy.
