Steelers Closing In On Deal

Duce Staley Profile

PITTSBURGH -- The Steelers appear to be closing in on coming to a contract agreement with former Philadelphia Eagles running back Duce Staley.

The Steelers negotiated with Staley, a 29-year-old running back, into the evening before he left at 7:30 p.m. with director of football operations Kevin Colbert.

When asked if the two had come to an agreement, Staley said: "That's what we're trying to get done tonight, or in the wee hours."

The 5-11, 220-pounder played for the Eagles the last seven seasons and accumulated 4,807 yards on 1,200 carries (4.0 avg.). Staley also caught 275 career passes for 2,498 yards.

Last season, Staley held out of training camp in an attempt to renegotiate the final year of his contract. Upon his return, Staley found himself in a three-man rotation with Brian Westbrook and Correll Buckhalter and gained only 463 yards on 96 carries. Staley also caught 36 passes last season.

I think it's surprised that it's the Steelers. He's not their type of RB.

They usually go for the big bruising type. You know Barry Foster, Bam Morris, Jerome Bettis, Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala. They already have a smallish type back in Zereoue & they are rumored to be in love with Steven Jackson in the first our Greg Jones in the second or third.

I heard that the Steelers were going to release Zereoue if they sign Staley.

Staley could be a pretty good addition to Pittsburgh's offense. He isn't a great back but he is definitely good enough to start, and he can catch the ball pretty well.

I heard they are going to release Amos regardless of Free Agency.

But anyhoo, Duce done left Pitt. without a contract and is on his way to the land of inflated signing bonuses (Detroit) :o

It's a done deal.
