A Phinatic friend suggested not keeping any of our FA's this year because of play, contract, and age. He made some fair points for doing so. A few of his idea's.

Forget the big contracts for the over 30's looking to break the bank in Starks, Soliai, and Grimes.

Go for Pat Sims (28) from Oak, Linva Joseph (25) from Giants, or Cory Peters (26) from Atlanta in the interior DL.

Go for Rodgers-Cromarte (28) from Denver, Cliff Harris (25) from Denver, or Atterruan Vernier (25) from Tenn. at CB.

Go for TJ Ward ((27) from Cleve at S.

Opinions?

Grimes 3 years deal.
Soliai 4 years
Clemmons another 1 year
Carroll 4 year
id be willing to let Jerry stay for cheap

We'd all love to replace our older less talented players with younger more talented free agents. But I doubt it can be done within the cap limit restraints.

That's a lot of players to replace. I would certainly keep Grimes, at least one of Soliai/Starks, probably Clemons, and maybe Carroll.

You need to keep some continuity on the roster plus it just isn't that easy to replace starters- even average ones, across the board. If it is age you are afraid of, you can also throw the franchise tag on one of them for a year giving you more time to find a replacement.

I think you meant Chris Harris not Cliff.

I don't even want to think about our D without Grimes, Soliai and/or Starks. D was not good at all and minus these guys for the ones you listed? OUCH.

STARKS, GRIMES, and Carrol (right price) Should and need to be signed. Soliai probably wants a HUGE contract. No way we keep both but Starks is better IMO.

Everyone else should be let go on that list.

Sign TJ ward over Clemons. Sign Albert and Draft a RT. Sign Asomah for LG and Draft a RG. Oline Solved

resign Keller (would come cheap after Serious injury)

Release Wheeler and get a quality LB in FA or Draft.

I thought he made a pretty good point. Really, the only one's who matter are Starks, Soliai, grimes, and maybe Clemons. He did offer alternatives, which are pretty good, younger, and cheaper.

We're only talking 3 players who will be high priced, and we very likely be saving a bunch by replacing them. The "replacements" don't look bad, IF available.

Thanks for the correction, had a Cowboys flashback. :)

I was thinking the same as you on Grimes, Starks, and Soliai but, gonna re-think with the other options mentioned.

Anyone of them would be replaceable in my eyes as long as a viable replacement is brought in. I would want to keep Grimes unless he wants a kings ransom. Starks and Solei are tough to let go but let's face it, they're not #1 and #2 at that position. I would keep one rather than break bank paying for two.

Either coaching or run support sucked, too many big plays given up when we needed a hard stance.

Grimes 4 year deal
Solia 2 year deal
Clemmons 1 year deal
Clabo 1 year deal (hopefully for depth this year)

All other UFA can walk if they want. Grimes is a must sign!

Grimes and either Soliai or Starks need to be re-signed. Also make a good offer to Carroll and Clemons to stick around. The rest will either be cheap to bring back or can be replaced

Southbeach - I see you're point, but there are two FA's I feel strongly that we must re-sign.

(1) Brent Grimes - proved he is still one the best at his position. He's a physical freak with a lot left in his tank. You don't let a guy like that walk.

(2) If I had to chose between Starks/Solai, I would chose Paul Solai because he's legtimate mountain that can occupy two blockers. Our run defense was pretty bad last year, and it got worse when he wasn't on the field. We need to go back to days when we had two stud DT's (remember the days of Tim Bowens and Darrly Gardner) occupying blockers so Zach Thomas could roam freely. If we do that for Ellerbe, the run defense will improve significantly. Young DTs in free agency are very expensive; I rather draft the DT (Daniel McCullers) from U. of Tennesse in the 3rd or 4th round. We can find good DTs in the mid rounds, we drafted Solai in the 4th round.

Other notes:

I would offer Dustin Keller another contract, a contract that will protect the team. During the summer, he looked happy to be in Miami, he'll want to prove himself again, and he will come cheap.

Maybe I'm a little harsh on this guy, but I'm not a fan of Nolan Carrolllike some on this board. I give him credit for being a hard worker, and he's made some improvement. I still think he's a liability in coverage though. IMO...he should never be a starter (even if there is an injury to the original starters), he's more of a backup's backup. I hope Jamar Taylor is ready to step up and stay healthy, the same for Dmitri Patterson (I hope he agrees to re-structure his contract this year). The Dolphins should take a "wait and see" approach before re-signing Carroll. Let Patterson, Taylor, and Will Davis compete in camp. See if they can stay healthy before spending money on Carroll. Carroll won't get many looks in free agency, so just wait and see what the others can do first.

Chris Clemons had a good year, he's not flashy, but he's very solid and doesn't give up big pass plays. I like T.J. Wardbetter though. I would go after Ward before offering Clemons a contract.

John Jerry - offer him a cap friendly contract, but I would be looking for another guard to give him some serious competition.

The other thing that comes into play is the new GM, and how much we go 3-4, if at all, and IF the new GM will have any say in what we do.

It makes a difference.

My opinion, posted before, was to keep the D together and keep Starks, Soliai, Grimes, and Clemons. My friend had a completely different one, and is giving me second thoughts.
