Disclaimer: I sincerly apologize if this has been discussed at length before. I'm new, so please cut me a break.

Do any of you ever think you'll see the day that either Duper or Clayton make it to the HOF? My personal thought is that Clayton has a decent shot someday, but Duper would be left out. Clayton has great numbers, and he did once hold the record for TDs in a season. He was Marino's #1 guy, and for a long time, he and Marino had the most TDs of any QB-WR combo in history. Lesser players are already in, so I have to figure that someday, the voters will wake up and say - Oh, I guess we should put him in the hall, huh!

As for Duper, as amazing as he was, I just don't see his #s getting anyone's attention. Plus the drug stuff never helps. It would be nice, but it's probably a stretch.

Thoughts?

I think Clayton will eventually make it in... but it may be like 10 years down the line.

Oh I would love to see them both in there....but since its all sportswriters voting...they may think Duper and Clayton looked good because of Marino....but then again you could argue that the other way a bit. I hope they aren't voted in as "old-timers".... for our Franchise I say its all about Marino, Shula...Duper, Clayton...and then Stephenson, Griese, etc.

yes we did dicuss it in a lengthy thread last night but I while I think Clayton has a better shot than Duper (based solely on #s) it's going to be tough for even Clayton to get in. Why? because there are a good # of recievers who put up #s similar to Clayton's.

I hope he gets in though....heck I hope they both get in but I think we as Dolfans view their HOF worthiness as being higher than the actual voters do. That, and I've already heard voters like Peter King (who I can't stand but has a vote none the less) say that both guys are considered good only because of Dan and that that is what will hurt them more than anything, right or wrong.

i was waiting for this thread.......hopefully both of them get in, but i don't think that will happen

"The sum is no greater than its parts."

Translation: Dan Marino would not have accomplished all those records without his supporting cast: Duper and Clayton. Yes, with my heart I hope that both would make the HOF. But realistically speaking I don't think they will.

Clayton has the best shot imo he was the more "spectacular" of the two and has better numbers it will be a long haul tho they are both very borderline.

If Lynn and Stallworth made..... I think Duper and Clayton should. If those two steelers never made a superbowl appearance, they certainly wouldn't be in the HOF now I think

I think that's part of the problem...the voters realized that Swann was a mistake (arguably the worst enshrinement of all time) and are now "cracking down" on who the let in.

That said...it's 10 years overdue that the voter became more selective. As the Swann vote shows, they've been letting far too many players in that shouldn't be. I think the voters themselves made the mistake of NOT taking into account the different eras and started thinnk exactly the way you just stated "well if player X, who up this year for a vote, has better pure stats than player Y, who we voted in 5 years ago, then player X is a must"...I just don't think that's the right way to do it.

Now players like Swann we voted in simply as sentimental favorites...which is plain WRONG. It screws up everyone's idea of who should get in. His #s didn't support it (no matte what era he played in). He was voted in because half his team from the 70s was already in, he had a bunch of SB rings (which is a TEAM accomplishment not an individual one), and He was on TV all the time during the boom of the NFL on TV....just wrong on sooo many levels.

Hopefully though ( i've stated this before) they become almost as selective as baseball's HOF voters. I say almost because they're just rediculously strict. But the football voters need some of that. It'll help the integrity of the HOF and keeping it as something that "not everyone gets in" will make sure that it's still special for the players.

EDIT: I do think that an argument for Stallworth can be made but certainly not Swann!

stephenson was probably the second best player ever to play for the dolphins.

I'm with you on that. I voted for him on the new poll that went up last night.

Duper has no shot, Clayton has a slight chance way down the road.

The truth is, whether anyone likes it or not, is that Marino did make them, not the other way around.

They were good smallish receivers.....not hall of famers.

as King said (did I mention that I hate Peter King so I really hate using his quotes :) ), he couldn't "think of a signature play for Clayton, nothing stands out"

While I know we can all think of great plays he made, we ARE big dolphin fans. The voters ARE supposed to be UNBIASED (sure) but the fact is that Clayton didn't dominate his position during his era. I think this "domination of their postion during their era" thing is something in the future that we'll here used when discussions on the HOF candidates happen.

Peter King is a tool, but he's a tool with a lot of NFL connections/sources, and a tool with a job at SI. :rofl3: So, it's only natural to quote the guy from time to time, so don't feel bad about that.

This argument is what is keeping Clayton and Duper out for the time being, no doubt. But I just think someone will rally the cause for at least Clayton someday. And when I say someday, I mean, 20-30-40 years from now if it doesn't happen soon, which it probably won't. I just think when the voters actually looks at his accomplishments in an unbiased fashion, the votes may come. Duper is likely done, which is too bad, but if I had a gun to my head and had to choose one, there's no question it's Clayton.
