Dwight Stephenson to be Honored This Year

Marty Lyons did end his career with that hit to Dwight’s left knee, but it wasn’t intentional. Those two have been friends long before they played in the NFL. They were friends at Tuscaloosa when they played together under Bear Bryant in Alabama. Marty actually felt terrible when it happened. And they have remains friends even to this day. Dwight, being the great person that he is, doesn’t blame Marty for his misfortune. It was just an unfortunate hit.

And yes…..Dwight was for sure one of the best centers that played the game. But, for those young ones that were not around, the best NFL center of all times has to be Jim Otto. Played for 15 years, went to 12 Pro Bowls and was an All-Pro for 10. Mike Webster should also be considered as he played in 9 Pro Bowls and was an All-Pro 5 times. Extremely sad how CTE destroyed his life….
What made Dwight so special was his strength and quickness. And he was a true technician. He played at 6’2 and around 250 lbs, and had to go against players much bigger than him many times in his career. He controlled them with his quickness and pure strength. Truly a beautiful thing to watch!
During his career at Alabama Dwight had to face Bob Baumhower in practice, just like he did for many years in Miami. Those two great players going at it was great to see.

This is fantastic news, and long overdue! One of the greatest ever to play the position -- what an amazing offence we had in those days!

Thats Great News!! Love ya Dwight. Greatest center of All time. If you haven't, review some of his tape. The best to ever do it. Congrats!! Lets Go Dolphins!!!
I've got to ask - is your username a reference to Dwight? :)

I never knew this. Thank you for filling me in as I’ve blamed Lyons for decades. I’m glad to know it wasn’t intentional.

Those are the guys whose opinions count - not the "fake friends" pounding their chests about someone else's problems!

One of the best football players, regardless of position, I’ve ever had the pleasure to watch. You do not start an “NFL All Time” team and leave his name off of it. Period.
