We all know how awful both Ellerbe and Wheeler are. Not sure how familiar everyone is about contracts so I'll post this which perfectly explains June 1 cuts. http://overthecap.com/explaining-the-june-1st-designation/ basically you can designate two players a year as "June 1 cuts" we did the same thing to cut Dansby and Burnett. If we designate Ellerbe as a June 1 cut his dead money drops from 11.6 M to 7.M which would result in 250,000$ in cap savings. If we designate Wheeler as a June 1 cut his dead money drops from 10.6 M to 6.4 M, resulting in no cap savings. The only catch is that you are on the books for their salary until June 1st. Then you get the relief and with the dead money half of it is charged in 2014, with the other half in 2015. As an example in 2014 we are charged 1.25 M for Kevin Burnett and 2.325 M for Karlos Dansby. Basically we can wipe our hands of these AWFUL signings and take no real cap loss. And as far as budgeting for FA we have 38 M in cap space, so we will be fine. We can use the money we get from the June 1st cuts on June 1st for draft picks.

Good. Cut them both. Jordan takes Wheelers spot. Plug Misi in at MLB and draft/sign a OLB or Keep Misi in his spot and draft/sign a MLB.

Then we have to replace both of them. I'm disappointed in the replacement LBs - more so Wheeler, but we still have to figure out how to, not only replace them, but to make sure we don't further degrade the positions. In other words, because of the other (and bigger) areas of concern we have, we're stuck with them. Hopefully....HOPEFULLY...they will both improve in their second years in the system because it's a 99% sure thing they will both be back.

I think Ellerbe is worth looking at another year. I don't need to see more of Wheeler though.

Wheeler kept getting costly late-hit penalties so he's gotta go. Ellerbe, I think, can improve and be OK moving forward.

Not as an MLB. Id be ok if he came back and played some OLB.... But he just isnt that good. Or at least wasnt for us last season. If he comes back... its as an OLB or not at all.

as far as LB's in FA.. coincidently Karlos Dansy is the top available also. Brandon Spikes is TERRIFIC against the run, however is a liability on 3rd downs. The next best player is Kavell Connor from Indy. But he was injured for part of this year. In the Draft if CJ Mosley from Alabama is available we sprint to the podium to draft him. Mosley is currently my #1 prospect for this draft. In the 2nd round we could target guys like Ryan Shazier from Ohio State, or Telvin Smith from FSU. Both are WILL Linebackers in a 4-3. Both possess good instincts, pass coverage, and tackle well. Their only problem is they struggle to separate and shed blockers. That could be minimized by us re-signing Starks and Soliai. Another target on Day 2 could be Shayne Skov from Stanford. He would project as a MIKE or SAM Linebacker. My main issue with Skov is that he is not a 3down player. Good instincs and sheds well but will be a liability in coverage. FA + the Draft is much richer at OL then LB.

So you don't like the linebackers the GM signed but you trust him to sign another and get it right? If you cut both of them there are no free agent signings...we'd have too much money tied up in dead money on the salary cap for next year which means we may have these guys for a year and then have to make cuts the following year to get under the cap...you're looking at about $21 million in dead money...almost 20% of the cap. It's cheaper to keep them. Also, the depth at linebacker sucks as it is...cutting these two would only make it worse even though neither is very good...I'd much rather have them out there than Austin Spitler or Jason Trusnik.

I think they'll give them another year unfortunately... the savings aren't enough for them to give up after one season.

You are off on your numbers. We would receive 250,000$ in cap savings by cutting Ellerbe. None for Wheeler. You fail to realize their base salaries will not count against the cap, only the dead money. Which would be 13.4 M not 21, and it would split 50/50 over 2014 and 2015. So please tell me what is wrong with cutting two players who are the worst starting linebackers in the NFL and they have even worse contracts, if you can wipe your hands of that then why not?????

i would like to see more of ellerbe. wheeler, however, should not be in the starting lineup come next september.
