NFL owners approved a bylaw proposal on Monday at the Spring League Meeting allowing clubs to dress a third QB without using an active roster spot on game days, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported, per sources informed of the decision.

That should help Miami who dressed 3 QB's most weeks.

Not sure how much it would have helped SF last year as who would have been the emergency guy anyway?

Not a guy good enough to beat Philly on the road.

Makes sense.

If they are going to, seemingly, randomly yank guys for commonplace hits, they have to have a way to mitigate the competitive unfairness.

I still don't understand why the NFL doesn't allow all 53 players be active on gamedays. I never understood the reasoning to only allow 46 players to be active. It makes no sense.

You just knew it was coming ASAP once that NFC Championship game happened last year, McCaffrey was about to have to take snaps. Just makes sense, if the friggin NHL can drag a dude out of the stands to play goalie then this is a no brainer. Although it would be cool if somebody could pull a Shane Falco and suit up at halftime-

Didn't we have this rule some years ago? Then they just gave the teams the 46th man roster spot on game day that could be used for any position. Teams just chose not to use it on a QB. Might as well just make all 53 game day eligible

Teams typically have injured players whose conditions aren’t severe enough to warrant IR, but significant enough to miss the next game. They are natural candidates to inactivate.

The rub comes when one team has 5 of injured players, and the other 1. Not only would the “dress 53” policy force injured to dress, but would also give a competitive edge to team with only 1 (vs. 5) injured players.

The reason for 7 total inactives may be NFLs best estimate of average number of banged-up (non-IR) players at any given time.

Not all inactives are injured. Some may simply not fit the scheme that week or are being kept from PS to avoid being poached.

Only problem with this is that the 3rd QB must make the 53 man rooster, that exposes someone we probably wanted to keep to the waiver wire at the end of training camp. Then you have to hope to get that person on your PS to keep them which allows them to only come up 3 times before you have to sign them to your roster. Which then mean someone else has to be let go.

Maybe those guys are not as "dumb" as everyone says? - LOL

Excellent point.
Well done!

As long as there is a size limit to a roster, this kind of thing can always be whined about. - LOL
