A rose by any other name would smell as sweet, but a quarterback by any other name might break an NFL rule. The Eagles signed Michael Vick with the intention of using him creatively, at various times throughout their games. The Dolphins drafted Pat White with similar (read: "WILDCAT!") intentions. But the NFL's rules regarding weekly roster construction could create some issues for both teams and both QBs.

The league allows each team to have 45 active players each week. If no more than two of those players are quarterbacks, the team may designate a 46th player as its emergency third quarterback. If that player enters the game prior to the fourth quarter, then the first two quarterbacks on the roster are prohibited from returning to the game at any position at any time. So if the Eagles designate Vick as their third QB, they can't use him until the fourth quarter without losing Donovan McNabb and Kevin Kolb for the rest of the day.

My question is: who decides what a "bona fide quarterback" is? And the answer, apparently, is the NFL.

I believe this has been said all along, but i suspect Pat White will be our #2 QB and in case Pennington goes down, Henne will come in and White will sit for the remainder of the game.

So if your #1 QB goes down does the second string QB have to replace them or can they be replaced by the third stringer? If so then make white and vick the second and if Penny or McNabb goes down just put in the #3 QB if they are a better option at that point.

If the #2 must replace the starter than we MUST make white the #2, cause Henne is stinking it up and having his position as the #2 QB affect the use of white in the Wildcat will be a detriment to the team.

People are making this out to be more than it is.

The solution is simple, only dress 45 players.

We can have 6 quarterbacks on gameday if we want, we just can't get that extra roster spot.

Too many sour grapes out there trying to cause trouble.

Couldn't they always list White as a wide reciever as well as the third string quaterback? I mean I know it's not the same, but watch Hardknocks you learned that Chad Ochocinco (Johnson) is actually the back up kicker. So couldn't that work for Pat White?

Doing that would be no differen't than just leaving white at QB and only dressing 45 players. The rule is that you can have a 46th player available but that player has to be the emergency QB and if he comes into the game then the other 2 qb's can't come back in the game. Bottom line is if you plan on Henne really being the backup AND playing Pat White for the wildcat or spread formations then you're only bringing 45 players to the game. Unless of coarse you list Pat White as the backup and Henne as the emergency QB. Doing that though if Pennington got hurt you'd either have to roll with Pat White for the rest of the game(which he's not ready for) or Put in Henne and White won't be able to play for the rest of the game which doesn't sound like that bad of an idea because Pat White won't get TOO many snaps during the coarse of a game anyway, But then what happens if Henne also gets hurt because now White can't come into the game so who plays QB?

Not this again! You can suit up as many QB's as you want as long as you don't exceed the active players limit. You can play all of them at the same time if you want as well. I still supsect (and have been saying this since draft day), White will end up as a WR, NOT a QB. In 1995 Pittsburgh handled Kordell Stewart the exact same way we are handling White. Kordell wa streated as a QB in camp and took snaps with the other QB's.

We only used the Wildcat for a little over 10% of our offense last season. If White does not emerge as (at least) the number 3 wideout, his effectiveness is greatly diminished. If he subs into the game, it will be obvious we are using Wildcat (now, we can have variations that the defense will have to figure out but part of the surprise element will be gone).

that wouldn't accomplish anything though....

he would still have to be active on gameday along with Henne....meaning we only dress 45. Since we don't have a 4th QB on our roster to even try and squeeze into the 46th roster spot....the whole distinction in this article is meaningless

It would have some signifigance for the Eagles if they wanted to try and keep all 4 of their current QB's (McNabb, Vick, Kolb and Feeley) and have the first 3 dress, and Feeley as the emergency QB....but that means that they are using 4 spots on their 53-man roster on QB's....which is dumb.

Essentially, this rule is only a concern if we plan on carrying 46 players instead of 45. Simple resolution, keep 45.

People really have a hard time understanding this rule. We will probably dress three qb's unless they will not use White in the wildcat. Henne will most likely dress every game.

There is no problem. If we dress 45 players and three are QBs, we're fine. Hell, we cold dress 5 QBs if we wanted.

Do we have a third qb to dress. I count only two. Are u including that guy that can play every position in the league lol
