............Finally got to watch my first Dolphins game of the year. I had to work, but gotta love DV-R.

At any rate, the following are my obersvations from the game:

The Offense: I'll start with the O-line. Plenty of beef up front, no doubt about that. Athleticism? I think it's lacking quite a bit in that department, more specifically the interior. I saw Hadnot and Anderson getting blown up quite a bit. Bennie was blocking air during a few instances, just showing a complete lack of concentration when attempting to lock up with his man. Now, in my opinion, the Panthers field a Top 3 D-line and Jenkins is by far the most disruptive D-lineman in the league. Yet, I came away so disappointed with the interior of our line. Pass protection was solid all-around, it was the run-blocking that lacked so much. I was very disappointed in that little 4th-and-1 that we got stuffed on. The announcers had it right, what were we pulling guards for on a goaline play like that?

Daunte Culpepper amazes me. If nobody mentioned anything about his injury, you would have never known. He and McMichael appear to be on the same page, but he's still working on his timing with the other recievers. Every time I see Marty Booker out there on the field, I keep thinking to myself how underrated this guy is. He simply makes plays. I liked the looks Ronnie was getting out of the backfield catching passes. Justin Peele made a great catch knowing he was gonna get walloped.

Joey Harrington impressed me. The big knock on him is locking on to recievers or not making his progressions, but I didn't see any of that tonight. He throws a bullet as well. I was interested to see how he'd fair with the first unit and to me he looked comfortable. I'm not saying annoint him as the starter, but if he had to come in the game, after what I saw I'd be confident he could hold the fort down. You gotta love his energy out there as well.

Cleo................well in his limited action he looked unstable out there.

The recievers looked solid. I'd definately agree that Hagan is quite the route runner for a rookie, but I do believe there's a little bit of a concentration issue when it comes to him bringing the ball in. I love watching Chris Chambers run. I swear the guy looks like a giant rubberband has flung him forward whenever he gets the ball and takes off. We're obviously very deep at this position. I didn't get to see much of Gibson, Russel, Arosh, or Murphy since the starters played most of the game. Gibson, looks like a beast. I hope we can find some way to get this guy factored into the gameplan.

The runningbacks were ok. Brown showed he's a hard cat to take down, but he's still showing just a little bit of indecisiveness behind there, especially with the run-blocking struggling.

The Defense: I love our D. I'm telling you, teams should be jealous of how deep we are on the D-line, especially at DT. I love how much Saban moves the guys around, constantly giving the O-line's a different look. Nearly every DT we put out there, from Big Daddy to Kevin Vickerson, was getting such a great push on the pocket. I'm also confident the secondary is going to be vastly improved. We've got some hitters back there. Hill and Tillman showed me alot tonight when it comes to play recognition, blowing up screens in particular. I also love the seconardary's run support. Will Allen and Andre Goodman get after those backs. I really like Goodman. He's new blood at #29 and I think we're going to get quite a bit out of him this year. Eddie Jackson was horrid when he was out there. That guy simply should not make this team. He looks so awkward out there.

Roth finally got his act together in the second half. He get great upfield push, made a few plays and helped to blow up others.

All in all I liked what I saw of the starters. I also think this is going to be one of the deepest teams we've fielded at nearly every position except runningback.

thanks for the synopsis... how did you watch it? before the game i was scanning everything i could and didn't even see a re-air of this game listed anywhere! grrr....

i read the play by play afterwards, and it seemed like our o-line was dominated... and Jackson was called for like 3+ penalites... and each of them kept the panthers drives alive....

what was up wtih special teams too? we gave up a touchdown, AND a 44-yard return on a punt. what was that about?

oh will be people STOP with the runningback depth - sammy morris is a GREAT #2...I dont understand some people.

Also, take into consideration that Eddie Jackson is JUST coming back from injury, though he isnt anything special anyways.

otherwise, thanks for the read.

he didn't say we had a problem with running back depth... he said our team is stronger than previous years at each position, except running back. (the combination of Ricky & Ronnie is a tad more volatile than Ronnie and Sammy)

;)

and the eddie jackson injury excuse would be ok if he was rusty, but he was committing flagrant fouls... thats concentration!

Well I'm over in AZ and Fox decided to air the game.

Our O-line was dominated when it came to the run game. It wasn't even funny how many times Jenkins was in our backfield before the o-lineman he lined up in front of was upright. They just seem a step slow to me, very slow reaction times.

Eddie Jackson was no doubt horrid. I don't see any reason why he'd make the team given all the other guys back there.

The special teams did nothing as far as returning kicks or punts. They were also terrible on that DeAngelo Williams kick return. You hate to see something like that, it was just a half-arsed attempt by everyone on the special teams................yet Williams is a burner, so it comes as no surprise to me.

I'm not taking anything away from Sammy. I liked him last year and that season prior. But from what I saw tonight, other areas of the team looked alot deeper. To Sammy's credit, he didn't get alot of looks tonight. But if the O-line doesn't shape up, I'm not confident a guy like Sammy can make it look better than it actually is.

.

No ... he's not... A thousand times, no...

Sammy Morris is not the answer at No. 2 tailback for this football team, i'm sorry, but he's not... He's a versatile football player, a stellar special teams performer, and a real professional... But he's not a guy we can win with if Brown is out for a week or two... Quite frankly, none of our guys right now are the answer behind Brown... We need a Verron Haynes...

It doesnt matter who are #2 rb is if our o-line keeps blocking like this. With that said, yes we could use another #2 but i doubt that happens because there is what? like 13 days away from the season opener. If we were gonna get another #2 then it prolly would of happened already, unfortunatly.

We won't be trading draft picks for any RBs. And quite frankly, the Steelers aren't about to part with their primary backup to fast Willie. For those about to correct me, Duce is being shopped around the league. Clearly, Verron is the future #2 back in the Steel City.

And considering the time of year, no one we can pick up is going to be a legitimate #2 behind Ronnie. We're gonna be picking from left overs and retreads. I kinda feel Stephen Davis would be a good situational goal line back and emergency #2, but with his health... you never can tell how close to his next injury he really is. Not too mention, he's apparently getting strong interest from the Rams and could possibly sign soon (he took a physical and passed earlier this week with St. Louis - Philly passed on him).

I had high hopes for Kay Jay, but he's having problems unseating Travis Minor (I'll be glad when we DO replace him). Even though I don't see him as a 3rd down back, I feel that's who he would have to beat out to become the #2 RB with Sammy sliding into a 3rd down role.

I have a feeling we will draft a solid prospect @ #2 next year in the first day, even if Ricky returns. This position is becoming a vital role on our team. Ricky's absence is becoming more clear each day. And, many of the fans who wanted him gone... are starting to find out just how good we had it last year. And his importance to the team.

I cant believe I'm going to say this....but...I.....agree...with..you.... . Morris is no Barry..theres no way without good run support that he will be able to do much of anything.

Nice Post. Some of my thoughts.....

O-line
Bennie Anderson looked completely lost at times during the run blocking. I saw a few instances where he completely whiffed or stumbled and fell to the ground. Do we have anybody decent behind this guy?

Secondary
I was impressed. It seems like the players are starting to learn the scheme a lot better and they had most plays covered very well. The slants seem open a lot but Im sure we can address that. Eddie Jackson is the new Reggie Howard, I hope this guy doesnt make the team. When we get TD back he have 3 very solid corners. I have to admit I have also been pleasantly surprised with Will Allen, as he plays hard and is very good against the run.

WR
I was a little disappointed last night, but I think more of it has to do with an excellent Carolina defense. Fred Gibson missed a few balls, Vick still hasnt shown me this explosiveness people are talking about, Wes Welker looks like a nice possession reciever in the slot. Hagan will be good.

Special Teams
Boy was I getting frustrated last night with this area (Im sure most people were). Not only did we look terrible on coverage, but it seems no one can block for our returners. I hope we can focus on this area in the upcoming week.

Overall
A very good game. Our defensive line looks spectacular. Secondary is coming together nicely. Im so excited to watch Dante connect with Chambers and McMichael all season.
Areas for improvement: run blocking and special teams.

Good analysis. Here are a few of my thoughts ...

Eddie Jackson was out there trying to overcome an abdominal injury. I don't know if that had any effect on his playing, but I thought he had played pretty well in the first game prior to his injury.

I think we got to see some of the pecking order on the wide receivers, moreso than in previous games. Gibson and Vick were in there before Russell, Aromashodu, Murphy, Broussard, etc. In fact Gibson and Vick were out for the last two series, I believe. I don't know if you can read anything into that or not.

Speaking of WR, Welker showed a great deal of toughness. He goofed on the muffed punt (which maybe he wanted to call the fair catch after he saw the guy getting pushed towards him -- don't know). But, he showed some good hands and ability to hold on to the ball.

Again speaking of WR, Vick received a nice "welcome" from the Panther fans everytime he was back to receive the punt. One thought I had was that maybe Saban elects to pass on Vick just because of the added distraction that it could bring to the team -- even if Vick may outperform other receivers battling for that last spot.

Were Tampa's special teams really that bad? Our special teams units (particularly the coverage units) played incredibly well against Tampa. But, we were consistently getting burned against Carolina. To me, it looked like so many of the players were just running and didn't know or care where the ball was, and ended up running past the return guy. Got to shore this up.

Our kick/punt return game is looking to be the real weak link of the team. That's not good. We need those guys getting us good field position.........and consistently.

I said it months ago. I really like our secondary. The guys we aquired are quality players. They're not stars, but they put their hard hats on and go to work. They're epecially adept at helping to stifle the run game.

Yes...he is...A gazillion times, yes...

Sammy is a very capable #2 RB. He is comfortable in this offense and there are no available running backs out there now who would offer better value than what he currently brings. Give Sammy better blocking and he will do just fine.

On most teams, there is a drop off in talent from the #1 back to the #2 back...dolphin fans got spoiled when Ricky was here and now seem to expect that to be the norm.
